A DEA crackdown on state-legalized marijuana is very different from the average war on drugs hassling of small time minority drug dealers. In the states that have legalized marijuana, the proprietors are largely white people, and increasingly well financed major local taxpayers.

The DEA doesn’t have the time or the resources to go after small fry, so if they’re involved, we’re talking about going after the legal-under-state-law players.

Now, it’s possible that they will still do so, just to piss off and disrupt the liberal states that have legalized marijuana. But suggesting that it’s just a repeat of Nixon-era war on drugs rhetoric is overly simplistic.

What you comment here is covered under the “Hippies” item. I would not be surprised that because of what they do the owners give money to a lot of liberal causes and politicians. IMHO they are Prime targets by the feds now to be disrupted to prevent money from being available for more future progressive efforts.

De-facto nullification and civil disobedience has been a driver of American history since the beginning.

It’s also been used to enact Jim Crow laws and other discriminatory acts. I don’t think it’s good policy for cities or states to pass laws attempting to supercede federal authority.

This doesn’t make sense at all. You think the states should protect people from future small-scale federal enforcement by engaging in current large-scale local enforcement? A handful of DEA agents might one day go out and arrest people, so it’s better to tell every single state and local officer to get them arrested now?

I think it’s better for the states not to tell their citizens that they’re OK with them violating federal laws.

I’ve been saying for years that state initiatives to legalize marijuana are bad policy because of federal supremacy and the fact that a future administration could easily put all those “legal” purveyors and users of the stuff behind bars.

That doesn’t make it bad policy. It makes it arguably a bad idea to open up a dispensary in a state that has legalized weed, but as a tactic for encouraging change at a federal level, the fact that over half the states in the country have some for of legal weed is a powerful argument for changing the federal law.

Haven’t read all of this thread yet, and I’m interested in the more important parts of the issue raised. But I had to stop after reading the above quote to ask… is medicinal pot really available for $50 - 100 an ounce? Where?

I know Jefferson Beauregard Davis Stonewall Lee Sessions is on record as not being a fan of weed, but let’s not forget that Obama’s DEA also raided some dispensaries on a regular basis if they strayed from anything that looked to be outside the realm of an authentic medical marijuana shop or otherwise strictly regulated by state laws as in Colorado.

Personally, I could see republicans being as much against or on board with the decriminalization of marijuana as their democrats if only for one reason: tax revenues at the state level. A lot of conservative states were once against gambling, but it provided revenue and allowed them to cut income taxes. The money’s hard to pass up. And republicans are supposed to be about states’ rights and local control and such.

Western Oregon …

In the licensed dispensaries it sells for $200 an ounce … when I went to buy some once (just to say I did) there was a limit of a quarter ounce because the place’s supplies were low … the store decided to serve their medicinal customers first and only the extra was available recreational sales …

Before then I was buying from a grower who was licensed for serving a half dozen patients … and he’d sell his excess on the street for $75 to $100 … this was “technically” still illegal, what I would call grey market … because throwing the guy in prison would have meant the State was on the hook for his cancer treatments …

Last summer a whole mess of people grew their legal maximum of (I think) three plants … do you know how much marijuana can be harvested from three plants ??? … so we had a lot of people who just smoked a few times a month with quite literally pounds of the stuff … I’ve still two thirds of the supply I was just given last fall … and my own plants are going in here next month …

Remember … this is medicinal grade … not the one-hit-wonder commercial stuff … so don’t get the idea that top grade Humboldt Green is being handed out for free … this is Willamette Valley Wimpy I’m talking about …
