The whole envelope rumor started by Lincoln’s oldest son, Robert. And as for the “audience was uninterested, Lincoln thought he was a failure” that’s the half truth. Yes, Lincoln thought it was a failure, because he thought the audience didn’t like it. Truth was, the audience was so stunned (with awe, not repulsion) they had nothing to say. They were expecting a little thing by Lincoln, as he had been called to give a word at the last minute.
