And another thing…

Colin Farrell, when you stand on stage in front of a good chunk of the world, could you possibly remove your chewing gum before you start talking?

I sure don’t know what people see in him - he seems like a self-indulgent prick to me.

> If you aren’t a well-known or established artist, I think it is perfectly natural to give a teary acceptance speech, no doubt thinking all the while, “just think how much this is going to boost my next picture salary!” But if you’re Kate Winslet, a huge star with more than she could ever want, it’s just annoying. Big deal, a bunch of dumb-ass movie critics think you did a good job. Who the f\*\*\* cares??

I love Kate Winslet, and was glad to see her win so much. But by the second speech, it was getting a little old…

Best part of the night was Gervais’ line to Winslet about the Holocaust - a shout-out to her appearance in **Extras**. See [here](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPTV8PZo-Tc) at ~3:25.

Jeeze guys, give her a break. She’s been nominated tons of times for both Golden Globes and Oscars and has never won. 12 total freakin’ nominations since her first one for Sense and Sensibility in 1996, and no wins. Not once. It’s nice to win sometimes, you know? She was starting to look like the Susan Lucci of the acting world. And the second win last night for Lead in Revolutionary Road, that was TOTALLY unexpected. Nobody, absolutely nobody, expected her to win that one. All the buzz has been centered around Anne Hathaway or Meryl Streep. It truly was as shocking to her as it seemed, because it was shocking to everybody. If she were blase about it, people would bitch about that too and call her an entitled cunt or something.

And regarding Colin Farrell, you should see **In Bruge**. Then you’ll know why he won. It was 100% deserved, and his speech was great.

Yeah, he went a bit overboard with the hair and the chains and the glasses. Oh look at me! I’m different from everybody else! Nothing wrong with that, if it’s natural. Is it? I don’t know.

He looked flaky. He’ll get Mickey Rourke parts, unless Gary Busey gets there first.

Wouldn’t have looked so bad if he had just washed his damn hair – though I guess that wasn’t the effect he was going for.

I noticed that quite a few dresses just didn’t seem to fit correctly. And why do Beyonce and Salma Hayek have to smash together/shove up the boobies so much? It makes them both look heavier and ill-proportioned. That’s not sexy or hot. It just looks like a bad fit and that no one had the balls to tell them so. Salma Hayek’s was no worse than usual, buy Beyonce, come on, we almost saw nipple. The dress was too tight for her to breathe well enough!

What a surprise it will be when a bunch of guys start posting to tell me how wrong I am. There…covered!

I figured Sting was trying to get a part in either the Wolverine or Wolfman movie.

The chewing gum was, per his own words in a recent article about him, a means of self-distraction to maintain his sobriety. In an evening with copious alcohol flowing freely and probably a few of his other vices available readily if you knew who to give a sideways glance toward right before walking into the men’s room. I won’t begrudge him that on a night when he was under rather a bit of pressure for the first time since cleaning up his act.

Similarly, I won’t begrudge Kate Winslet her tears and her rambling. Both _The Reader_ and _Revolutionary Road_) were labors of love for her for massively different reasons, she’s faced some angry criticism for _The Reader_ and surmounted some incredible expectations put upon her for _Revolutionary Road_ and come out the other side triumphant when she has, as she said “a habit of not winning things.” And with her best friends (Leo, Emma Thompson in the audience, Cameron Diaz reading her name) and her husband all there, yeah, tears. I think she’s real, and emotional and awesome. I hope like heck that she wins an Oscar too.

Okay - fair enough on the gum thing. I do find him to be a good actor, his attitude is just irritating…

Re: Kate Winslet - I agree that she’s great, and she is due an Oscar. But, that second speech just seemed kinda…overmuch. YMMV

I thought Farrell had the line of the night when he said he was sniffling because of a cold and “not from that other thing it used to be from.”

Also, I liked that Winslet put away the prepared remarks for the 2nd speech and just let it flow naturally. I just saw Revolutionary Road last night and she certainly earned the honors. She was fantastic in it.

I thought it was cool that she mentioned the author – Richard Yates. I read a collection of his short stories last year and was wowed. They remind me a lot of _Mad Men_, or _Mad Men_ reminds me of Yates. He could have written for that show, only it would have been darker and grittier. And there would have been tuberculosis.
