As noted in a [Time Magazine article](http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,404266,00.html) from 2003, when the movie adaptation came out, Barris had a history of fabrication. Although Barris apparently never acknowledged the CIA story as false, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything (other than Barris’ word) to suggest that any of it was true. So, probably somewhere between “he was just crazy” and “he made it all up as a joke.” - - Then again, if he _was_ an assassin for the CIA, wouldn’t that be exactly what you’d expect them to say? ---
