I can’t find a thread on this beyond [this one](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=446663&highlight=great+debaters+movie), started before the movie came out.

I saw it last night, which in itself is notable (only to me, of course), because I get to the movies about once a year. When my sister first proposed it, I had the same thought as the OP of that thread—_a movie about debating? How exciting could that be?_

I found, though, that to say it is a movie about debating is akin to saying that [Life is Beautiful](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118799/) is about the Holocaust—it is, but that’s not all it’s about, not by a long shot.

Anyone else see this and care to chime in?
