Not merely displaced. They were physically ripped away from their families and put into government boarding schools where they were abused and mistreated.
WTF? I was forced to take Washington State History in high school and we never covered this. Dammit! This would have been memorable for sure. Stupid public education system.

That sounds very much like it’s an allusion to the story I’m thinking of, but I even read the wiki article about that episode and it did not mention the inspiration for that plotline. It’s starting to bother me. I must find the story now!
If you are ever on San Juan Island, you can visit the American and British camps. The British lived a little better than the Americans. But the suffering was worth it since San Juan Island belongs to the US and not the enemy! The Oregon Treaty could’ve gone for a bit more detail. We love visiting the San Juans, Gulf Islands (the Canadian side) and Vancouver Island. We’ve done several bike touring trips and will be doing more. We’ve also done a bit of boat touring as well as my wife’s family is into that sort of thing. It’s a bit alien to me and I’m always petrified with father-in-law asks me to take the helm of their gigantic (to me) boat. ![]()
