The great Justin Bieber challenge

Aw you’re welcome!

Ok, so I am off today, and my SO is not around to complain about Bieber! So I listened to the songs.

First of all, his voice is entirely too high-pitched for my tastes, which says absolutely nothing about his skill - that’s just a personal preference. I have never liked high pitched voices - much prefer a deep solid male voice. In female voices I either like Tracy Chapman style songs, or lorenna McKennet - more silky than sweet and definitely not high-pitched.

That being said, I do like All I want for Christmas - he’s not as high in that one and it’s a fun, lively song.

I was really looking forward to “Little Drummer Boy” and was completely disappointed. I really feel like he butchered it. And what are with those (I think) horrible little snare drums? LDB needs deep, heavy drums, that resonate.

His rendition of Silent Night is also beautiful, but my goodness is his voice feminine. If I close my eyes i could easily imagine I am listening to a woman.

I can tell he’s not bad or anything but he’s just so far from my preference - so light and fluffy I feel like I’m eating candy. When I listen to music, i prefer darker overtone and heavier voices.
I read through your list of preferred music, and while we share some tastes, mostly mine don’t go that way: I prefer things like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cage the Elephant, Jet, Duran Duran, Collective Soul, Five for Fighting - all vastly different from Bieber.

I thank you very much for this fine gift, but I have to say I’m not sold. Yes, he is a good singer, and I got two songs out of it I liked. No, I won’t be buying any more or listening to Bieber.

Thanks again! You really are very generous to share this with us!

I broke my own rule and listened to a Christmas CD before Thanksgiving. Here’s my opinion:

1.) Only Thing I ever Get For Christmas: It’s OK, but he sounds VERY immature to me. Good voice for a kid.

2.) Mistletoe: I do like this one, happy, upbeat, cute song. Still sounds like a kid.

3.) The Christmas Song: Too warble-y. If he would cut down on the vibratto/quaver it would sound good, if a bit feminine.

4.) Santa Claus is Coming to Town: One of the best on the CD, it could definitely grow on me.

  1. ) Fa La La: Bleh. SO not Christmas-y. What’s with the stuttering?

6.) All I Want for Christmas is You: I really like this one a lot but had a tough time telling Mariah from Justin…

7.) Drummer Boy: OMFG- one of my favorite Christmas songs…BUTCHERED. Horrible, horrible, horrible. I could not force myself to listen to the whole thing.

8.) Christmas Eve: Yuck. Do. Not. Like. No tune, just words that may or may not rhyme strung together.

9.) All I Want is You: I’ll keep it simple. No thank you.

10.) Home This Christmas: Honestly, so many of the songs on this CD sound absolutely the same. It doesn’t sound Christmasy to me at all. Just adding a few sleigh bells dfoes not a Christmas tune make.

11.) Silent Night: Probably the best on the CD. Less is more, Justin, less is more.
Really, I thank you for allowing me to sample his music, but did it turn me into a Bieber-Believer? No. Just not my style.

Thanks for giving it a spin. I really hated Drummer Boy at first too, but the enthusiasm and silliness really grew on me and I enjoy it now. Of course I always found the original LDB a bit cloying and liked that they pepped it up a little.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ok, I like your passion, so I’m going to listen to it. I have no previous knowledge or bias of mr Bieber. (I’m 28.)

  1. Acceptable song, but I don’t like the overwrought RnB production, I fear this could get tiresome.

  2. This is pretty good. Reminds me of Jason Mraz - I’m Yours, which is a good thing.

  3. Agh, I hate this song with a passion. I hate the RnB vibrato phrasing of the notes, I hate the lame sounding guitar in the solo, I hate the RnB rhythm section. I listened to the original Nat King Cole version and it wasn’t particularly exciting, but didn’t hate it either.

  4. I like the funky bass thing. (It sounds very familiar, can anyone tell me where it’s from?) The Crystals version is still better, but he is doing something different.

  5. Boring

  6. Ok, this is actually an excellent song, one of the best christmas songs. But didn’t Maria Carey release the same cover of her own song last year? Except she sung all of that, and she didn’t sing all of this I guess. Not the biggest difference.

  7. Don’t like it. What’s with all the dance and rap stuff? How about accentuating the good parts of the song instead (the ba-ra-baba-ba part). By the way, what is the best cover of this song?

  8. Just terrible and boring. I miss Drummer Boy.

  9. Boring

  10. Pretty good

  11. Boring. Again with the vibrato.
Overall, I notice, pretty much the same opinion as PapSett. Some acceptable tunes, but it’s not the right style for me.

So far we’re all on the same page with this one, myself included. I liked it well enough at first, but it’s gotten a little tiresome.

The main body is the Jackson 5’s “I want you back” and the “Shake it shake it baby” Is from ABC.

But there’s hardly any on this one!

I think it’s interesting that so many people are confused by the R&B elements. Were you not aware he’s considered an R&B artist?

But most importantly, has everyone entered their code to see if we’re going to New York for New Year’s eve?

Thanks for listening, btw!

Thank you! I thought it was from a Jackson 5 song, but after listening to ABC and Blame it on the Boogie, I gave up.

No, I didn’t know anything about him, other than the chorus that goes “baby, baby, baby oooh”, and that people on the internet hate him.

“Baby”, oddly enough, is essentially a one-man (boy) doo-wop song. To me it feels nearly identical to “Runaround Sue” by Dion and the Belmonts. (Chord-wise, or something.)

Wait. Back up. There was RAP in Drummer Boy? How hideous! That is one of the few Christmas songs I actively like. Rap would make me hate it!

You hate it before listening to it?

I think in this case I can safely hate it before listening to it given that A) I hate rap in general, B) Rap in an otherwise nice Christmas carol sounds like an abomination and C) everyone else has said that the song was terrible.

So yes, I hate it before listening to it.
