Agree. From the video it looked like he might have tried cross controlling it but it didn’t work out.

Wow. My family is from very close to there (Delmar and Glenmont, NY). The plane stopped a few feet from the deep Normanskill Ravine, where there is no real shoulder on the Thruway bridge. Lucky in so many ways.

I’ve said it before in other contexts, but before takeoff you really need to rehearse the idea: “I am willing to deliberately severely damage this airplane to avoid severely damaging me.”
He didn’t steer into the grass because that act of committing deliberate aurcraft damage was unthinkable. So he crashed instead, destroying the airplane completely.
In a pinch, you’ll do what you rehearsed. Rehearse nothing and you’ll do nothing. Mostly.

I wonder if his checklist included road maps and highway flares.
Is induction icing a thing with fuel injection? He said he wanted to get down due to icy conditions.

Is there something in that web address that identifies that as a file download? 'Cause personally, I dont want to download a file when I click on a link here. Should I have known somehow that it was a download ? Or should it have been indicated by the person who posted the link? I honestly dont know how that works.
ETA: now that I responded to it I can see its a PDF but you can’t see it is when you read the original post.

My dad flew Starlifters in the Air Force. I remember driving by Boeing Field with him once and he pointed out the YC-14 prototype parked there.

Not that I recall. I think there were two prototypes; one in camouflage, and one in bare metal. At the time, C-141s and C-5s were painted in a two-tone gray.
The YC-14 and YC-15 were competing to be a replacement for the C-130. I thought I’d heard that the -14 won the competition, but then the whole plan was shelved and they just kept building C-130s. I was a little surprised when the C-17 was deployed and looked to have a lot in common with the YC-15.

They didn’t have to re-invent the wheel with the C-130’s. slap some JATOs on it and it was a short field takeoff plane…
The C-17 fills a gap between the C-130 and the C-5.

Replacing the C-141, I know. The design started life as an enlarged version of the YC-15.
Perhaps I’m wrong that the YC-14 was considered the better design of the two. Or maybe the YC-14 was the better tactical airlifter, but its advantages went away when considering a larger aircraft for the strategic airlift role.
There are so many airplanes with interesting, innovative designs, but which seem to be dead ends. It would be interesting to find out why some of them didn’t live up to their promise.

ISTR he also told the story of how the large supply of pure alcohol naturally led to serious parties out in the woods. The parties out in the woods quickly adapted to this - by burning barrels of jet fuel as they drank just as much as before.
