No.

I think the airplane + pilot was overwhelmed by the turbulence, wasn’t thinking go-around, and was just flailing madly trying to stay upright and sorta in control when he happened to flail blindly into the helo itself, not just its wake.

Had he applied full power and set flaps to anything less than 20 at the first sign of wacky turbulence he’d have been above the turbulence a good 30 seconds before he hit the helo. I don’t believe we know what flap setting the pilot was using. I’m overseas right now and the NTSB site doesn’t want to load for me.

I stumbled across this article today updating an event from some time last month. As best I could search, we didn’t post about anywhere upthread: **[Air India A320 issued stall warning when seatbelt signs off, injuring 24, investigators say | Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/india/drug-test-captain-air-india-flight-incident-was-non-negative-2026-09-04/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=Newsletter&utm_campaign=Weekend-Briefing&utm_term=090526&utm_content=090526&lctg=63ec0263e87f8e9c99057b43&user_email=0826745cf604504c73a27c1f963d79aa005ad8b5a2ab95de51409845500dc2fc)**.

Key points being the airplane lost all hydraulics for some brief interval of time. Which left the airplane mostly uncontrollable. Fortunately it didn’t get too stupid before normalcy returned.

Now whether that was an actual hydraulic failure, or some sort of monitoring glitch where the pumps were still making pressure but the airplane’s computers thought otherwise is unknown, at least to me. I’d have said it’d be borderline impossible to have all 3 systems fail at once, absent major battle damage, or a pilot switching them off. Which battle damage they did not have. @Richard_Pearse?

I mentioned upthread a fairly common 737 oops where a pilot, usually the FO, inadvertently switches off one of the two hydraulic systems. OTOH, the 737 can be flown adequately with zero hydraulics, so that falls in the “Mostly harmless; easy to correct” category of errors. Not so on later fancier machines largely or utterly dependent of hydraulics for flight path control.

As a separate sidelight, there’s some scandal brewing about drug / alcohol use among Air India pilots.

And we’ve got the festering sore of the government and the company, who’re intertwined a bunch, being unable to admit in public that the B787 crash last year was a suicide.

Lotta mess over at Air India these days.

What‘s the word in the aviation industry about the worldwide jet fuel supply situation, in view of the Strait of Hormuz still not being open, and damage to Russian refinery/transport capacity?

Shortly after the beginning of the Iran war the IAEA warned that there could be shortages within months. These seem not to have occurred yet (at least I did not notice any news reports). Even as the Hormuz situation stays unresolved and Ukraine has successfully hurt Russia‘s petroleum products exports.

The only thing that came to my attention is that Lufthansa has shut down its Cityjet short haul operations citing high fuel prices, and also cancelled some of its own short flights (such as a Stuttgart-Vienna flight in January 2027 that I was booked on)

Various aviation commenters looking at incident video and ADSB data feeds note a very unstabilized and hot approach and very long touchdown. The ground video shows the left mains coming off the ground as the plane zooms down the runway i.e. left wing was still trying to fly. AIUI if both mains are not planted on the ground you aren’t just missing those wheel brakes but your thrust reversers and braking spoilers don’t deploy.

Yes, an actual triple hydraulic failure would be extremely unlikely. Even more unlikely for them to all magically come back on line again. One of the hydraulic systems has a guarded switch so it’s not really possible to accidentally turn all of them off. Some kind of monitoring glitch is the most plausible possibility.

My employer haven’t expressed concern about supply, they’ve been more concerned about price. The fuel is available but it’s significantly more expensive. The response has generally been to consolidate the schedule so they’re flying fewer flights at capacity rather than more flights at 75%.

Or maybe, considering the PIC’s positive test for drugs, he turned everything off to “see what would happen”.

What I don’t really understand is that nowadays for a lot of mishaps on starts and landings there is amateur video beginning before anything can be seen to go wrong. Why is there a large number of people filming movements of standard airplanes that with p \> 0.999 are going to be totally unremarkable?

As well as the plane spotter phenomenon, incidents tend to happen when the weather is a bit marginal and people also like to film in similar conditions (in the hope of seeing a missed approach or rocky landing). at my home base there’s a regular YouTuber who has a live feed of the airport, normally when it’s windy. Several of my landings have been filmed and he inevitably gets go-arounds and dodgy landings as well. If there was an incident, chances are he would have it recorded.
