The great, ongoing Canadian current events and politics thread

What’s up with Canada Post?

If I understand correctly, Canada Post was legislated back to work over a week ago. I thought mail delivery was supposed to resume last week.

I have yet to see evidence of it - no mail delivery to my house since before the work stoppage.

Did I misunderstand? Has anyone else received mail in the past 7 days?

I have, but nowhere near the volume that I normally receive.

I got a London Drugs flyer advertising sales that had ended a week earlier.

And I’ve got a few bills and stuff.

I really, really hope that my snarkiness came through on this post. If you think I was serious then my reputation is in big trouble.

I have received a bit of mail, but my VISA bill which would be due today is still AWOL - I just paid an estimate to maintain my sterling credit rating.

I don’t know exactly when and where my family came to Canada - my dad’s family was from England, and went back and forth for generations, apparently. My mom’s family (Mennonites from Holland/Russia) came over and settled in Saskatchewan (I think) some time around the 1900’s (I think).

It just occurred to me that the mail that I have received has been delivered by a private contractor (a rural route), whereas I have not received any mail at my business address, which is serviced by a Canada Post union employee.

…well…I thought it was snarky…but…you are a Leafs fan…:smack::wink:

I think I’ve received one or two items of real mail, but mostly just spam this week. Don’t know if it’s being delivered by Canada Post or a random neighbourhood person. I am still waiting for those cheques, which pisses me off since I need to pay for a dragon boat race again soon!

I really wish I’d picked a different user name when I came here originally. I know I could probably change it, but then it would be too confusing. Anyway, I’m not really as vociferous a fan as most; but they’ve been my team since I started watching hockey. Dave Keon was the captain then!

“KindofaLeaffan”? I’d still probably make fun of the team, though, because I’m pretty sure I’m required to by law

Will and Kate have made me like them a little. They dragon boated in PEI yesterday, which is a rather good promotion of the sport. Damn them!

Where in Saskatchewan? My mom lived in Weyburn and later Regina.

I’ve been getting proper mail. Still a few things missing that ought to have arrived, but stuff is making it’s way through the system.

Three out of four of my grandparents were born in Alberta - but I’m not sure when their families arrived. I should look into that…

I’ve been getting mail for the last week or so. Not as much as normal, and some things I’d expect to have by now are dreadfully late–most bills, for example, haven’t shown up yet. But the junk mail is as plentiful as ever.

As for the other question: circa 1840, Hastings County, Ontario.

My mom’s family settled and farmed around the Saskatoon area. Here’s a bit of trivia - when I got married, the marriage certificate wanted my mom’s birthplace, which turned out to be a latitude and longitude - she was born on the farm.

My dad’s family settled around Moose Jaw (I had a relative who was in the party that named Moose Jaw).

Bills arrived at my office today.

Here’s an article about the slow return to service by Canada Post.

I still haven’t received my cheques, though today I did get a bill for something that was due last week.

Here’s an interesting Maclean’s article - Ten reasons why there has never been a better time to be a Canadian.

In your face, all you green weenie Vancouverites - Calgary is the world’s most eco-friendly city, according to the lastest Mercer ecology study!

I got my credit card bill a couple of days ago. It was due June 30.

Fortunately, I use ePost, so I got the electronic copy ages ago. I’m not even sure why I still get the paper copy.

I just read Jack Layton’s statement that he’s stepping down temporarily as NDP leader to focus on his health - while his prostate cancer is responding well to treatment, he has a new, non-prostate cancer that requires treatment.

Wishing him a full recovery.

I just saw Mr. Layton on the news - he really isn’t looking good. I wish him a full and speedy recovery, too, but it isn’t looking likely at this point.

I completely agree. Jack’s voice wasn’t even strong. No, something’s amiss here.

I’m at political odds with the NDP but completely respect Mr. Layton. Somehow I don’t think this will end well for him, or the party.
