The great, ongoing Canadian current events and politics thread

And now for something completely different: the man with three wives.

The B.C. Supreme Court has found that the criminal prohibition against polygamy meets the Oakes test, in that the offence infringes one’s rights, but is reasonable given the pressing and substantial problem of child and woman abuse in polygamous communities. [Reference re: Section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada, 2011 BCSC 1588.](Reference re: Section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada, 2011 BCSC 1588)

Henlein must be rolling in his grave in whatever timeline he is in.

And now for something also completely different - Rob Anders doing the bob during Question Period. What an ass monkey.

I’d agree with you, except for the fact that Question Period is nothing more than a forum for opposition parties to attack the governing party with sarcastic, loaded questions and that the governing party answers with glib, off-handed answers.

Question period is an embarrassment and I can’t fault anyone for nodding odd in such a vacuous environment.
ETA: I would like to see a reform in question period whereby actually FUCKING questions are asked, not sarcastic political posturing by all. FUCK!

Who keeps electing this fellow?

At least he showed up !

I’m wondering if the opposition will demand his resignation for nodding off.

I can see the Pat Martin tweets about it now. " WTF is this bullshit ??? We demand that they fire this cocksucker now for poor decorum !!!"

He’d make a good TTC subway ticket booth attendant.

The voters in his riding in southwest Calgary want a different candidate, but the Conservative Party of Canada won’t let them get anyone else. Jerks.

Say what? Was this like how the Liberals booted Jean Augustine so that Iggy could take her place in Etobicoke-Lakeshore?

Northwest, in fact. He used to be my MP for a couple of terms before I moved out of that riding. When I saw that clip on the news tonight, my only thought was “typical”, and “this isn’t even top 20 on the list of stupid shit Rob Anders has done”.

Yes, this is just the lastest public embarrassment for the Conservative party and for his riding in a long and storied career for this ass-taxi. At least he hasn’t been accused of spreading hate… lately. If he had any sense of decency or shame, he would have fallen on his own sword long ago. But clearly that’s not going to happen. As noted above, there has been at least one attempt in his own riding to have him removed, but the Conservative Party, inexplicably, has refused to get rid of him and, even more inexplicably, keep defending him. He’s a big reason why many people in this country don’t take the Conservatives seriously.

Did I mention he is close personal friends with everyone’s favorite Canadian Rush Limbaugh clone, Ezra Levant? Or that the two of them sued the University of Calgary’s student newspaper back in 1993 for libel? (They eventually dropped the case because they didn’t have one)

Word is, he has not been available to the media for comment on this latest incident since it started to go viral. He’s probably asleep, or trying to think up new ways to accuse people like Nelson Mandela of being terrorists or something.

May I add how glad I am that I have never heard of Ezra Levant before?

Heh, people in my riding are still pissed about that.

Ah yes, the troll who invited Ann Coulter to do her campus touring last year. He’s really a non-stop right-wing, preachy, hack and kinda an alround dick. Here’s Levant pissing on CBC staffers (1:00-2:10) and harassing some poor security guard (3:00-5:00).

I used to live there and I’m still pissed about it too. It goes a long way to explain why I didn’t want to vote Liberal.

I had a strong feeling the Liberals were doomed before the last election, based on the generality of this reaction in my riding. No-one was happy about it and the way it was done was so very tone-deaf.

Heh - looking it up, we’re both right - he’s the MP for Calgary West (south and north).

Lucky bastard.

Just hearing from my Lethbridge friends about the fire - hoping you’re okay, Spoons!

Fingers crossed.

Holy crap, what a windstorm! Downtown Calgary was actually closed today - here is a gallery of some pictures. I opened the back door to let the cat out, and while holding onto the door, it practically yanked me out into the yard.

I blame myself - there’s a friggin’ storm here on my birthday every friggin’ year. :frowning:

Yes, we’re OK, and thank you for the concern, Le Ministre. Had the Lethbridge FD not been on the ball, things might have been different. But they were ready and willing so… They did a great job. I was a little concerned, but the fire was nowhere near my place, so I didn’t worry too much. Of course, if the wind changed, it might have been a different story. Regardless, I was watching and ready.

Thanks for the concern, folks. Good to know that Dopers are watching out for each other.
