# The Gum Subject

In refrence to the ‘what makes gum fall apart?’ subject, I just have to add that there was a woman who chewed the same piece of gum for her entire life. She’s even in the guiness book of world records. Either she’s lying, or it was some stupendous piece of gum for it to never have fallen apart!  
Also, I’m curious why gum tastes so bad all of a sudden when it falls apart. Does the flavor just vanish?

Hi, Bonnie! Welcome to the Straight Dope! Say, could you please post a link to whichever column it is that you’re referring to? (“The column to which you are referring,” pardon me, Arnold)

All you have to do is, copy and paste the URL of the column you were reading from the address window into the Reply window in this thread (click on Post Reply) and the vB software will take care of making it into a link automatically.

Thanks! That way we can all get on the same page, literally. Cecil has several columns dealing with chewing gum. Which one were you reading, is the $64,000 question.

My WAG as to why gum tastes so bad when it falls apart is that you just sucked all the sugar and flavorings out of the gum base.
