Jesus fucking christ. If ANYONE ELSE had posted that, none of you would fucking have a problem with any of us complaining. I do skip handy’s posts 90% of the time, because he’s a moron. This went WAY beyond that. And drop? I can be offended if I want. A murder opening up a space in a dorm ISN’T FUNNY. And that has NOTHING to do with how I function at my job with offensive people all around me. But I forgot, you know all about everything. Forgive me. :rolleyes: ---

I have poster-specific contexts within which I process what I read by them, depending on what, if anything, I know about a poster. I’ve seen handy post that his deafness informs his use of the written word. One may believe that or not as they see fit, I guess. I gathered from handy’s explanation in the thread in question here that he didn’t mean “two people died maybe you can fill their spot” when he made his comment. He explained that this is the second murder, they still haven’t solved the first, people are leaving the school in fear because they don’t feel safe. I see the sentence in question, then, as a shot at Galludet, that a school for the deaf might be accepting hearing people now because they’re losing all the deaf students for whom they can’t provide a sense of security. handy made a far too vague comment about an extremely touchy subject, was rightly called on it, and has explained himself to my satisfaction. So I got no problem with handy. ---

The problem here is that we live in a (waaaaaay) too PC society, where most are uncomfortable and unwilling to criticize a person they _perceive_ as handicapped. It’s a HUGE fucking problem if you ask me. I used to be the same way, until I married my husband. His sister is severly epileptic and mentally retarded (though trainable…most of her damage manifests in temporal lobe problems), in a wheelchair usually. If you give her an inch, she’ll take a mile and she knows how to manipulate the situation terrifically. If you tell her that her actions are inappropriate, she’ll sigh, roll her eyes and laugh. She may not have a stellar IQ, but she knows what’s going on. On some level, she understands that people are generally more lenient with her and works it well. handy may not be “handicapped” but needs to be aware, in the same way, that his actions and posting style are annoying, often offensive and therefore inappropriate. If he isn’t told, how can he figure it out and change? Providing he’s interested in changing… :rolleyes: ---

As an aside: My husband’s cousin is also epileptic, but severly retarded, not even in the trainable range (ie, he has a problem with his foot, but they won’t do surgery because they know he’d never learn to walk again). Early in my relationship with Hubby, the cousin took a shine to me and would fondle himself whenever alone in my presence. My first tactic was to avoid him at all costs. That didn’t work, because he started following me. Then he started getting “huggy”. I don’t know if you’ve ever been hugged by a 6’4" 40yo retarded virgin with a hard-on, but I assure you, it was terrifying. After three more family functions of me dodging him and my feeble cut-it-out’s, I finally stood up to him, with the help of a few drinks. Standing in the family room chatting, I saw him coming at me from across the room. I stopped him with an outstreached palm and announced to the entire family, “Don’t hug me. I don’t want hugs from you. Don’t follow me around and don’t touch your penis in front of me, EVER AGAIN!!!” Mr. Duhnym’s aunt still hates me, but it solved the problem. ---

OK, handy can be annoying, and he usually posts little to do with anything. He was completely out of line with that comment. He should apologise. But I probably contribute even less than he does. I’m coming up on 2500 posts, after 18 months here, but can only think of about 2 or 3 occasions that I have actually been “fighting ignorance”. Handy can be a jerk, but 99% of the time his jerkness can be ignored. Sometimes he can be funny. This occasion wasn’t one of them. ---
