The Harry Potter DVD

I rented it, and attempted to navigate the second disk. After five minutes of getting “try again” I said the hell with it. Maybe if I buy it…

Here is what I put in my journal:

Extra Footage on Harry Potter DVD
To get to the extra footage, you have to finish a “quest”…
Took me forever to find it, but here is how:

Put in disc 2

Click on Diagon Alley
To open the wall, click the bricks in this order:
–left up up click
–up click
–right down down click
–down click
the wall will open and you get the signs

Click on the key on the Gringotts sign - get your money

Click on Olivanders and go through the wand selection - get your wand

Go back out to the main menu

Click Classrooms

Click Potions

Click the mortar and pestle
–Potion 1: Asphodel and Wormwood
–Potion 2: Monkshood and Wolfsbane
–Potion 3: Snake Fangs and Porcupine Quills

The Key room:
–The correct key is up up right click

The Bottle room
–The correct bottle is the yellow round one

The Mirror room
–Click on the stone

Voila! the extra footage.

Did anybody else notice problems in subtle shades of grey, like clouds or fog? In 3-D animation we call it ‘banding’ and it usually means that the compression is set too high. Was this because of the length of the movie, or because I’m playing DVD’s on my Playststion 2?

BTW, you don’t really have to click on the stones leading to Diagon Alley in any particular order. You just have to do three different tries so Hagrid can say all his lines.

My sister, whose IQ is 8 points higher than mine, actually plugged in Disc 1 and checked out the stones Hagrid taps in the movie. (snort)

Actually, you can successfully enter if you do it in the order Hagrid did. I think one of the clues on Disc 2 they give is “a circular order.”

See? Even Opal knows.

It was easy to remember, because when I saw the movie I thought “what a stupid pattern! That would be anyone’s first guess!”

In the actual movie, or in the extras?

I just got the DVD last night, and haven’t had a chance to check (sucker was $9.99 at Blockbuster!). But I do remember from seeing it in the theater that I was incredibly unimpressed with the special effects, and that the Quidditch match was poorly done (noticeable bluescreen lines around the actors - I’ve seen better special effects on the local weather reports).

But the thing to remember is that we don’t enjoy this movie because of the effects, but because it’s Harry friggin’ Potter.
