Tarantino loves the word nigger almost as much as he loves feet.

> I suspect even a person of that time would find the use excessive. It may have been used more in common usage at the time, but as a descriptor, not always an insult. Every use in the H8 is used as an insult and for shock value. The characters are deliberately trying to harass the one lone black guy, a guy who isn’t some cowed slave, but a badass with guns and a willingness to use them. Doesn’t seem the best course of action for them. (And considering the result, it wasn’t.) Just another example of how stupid they and their plan were.

How can you use the word as a descriptor and not an insult? Describing someone using the word is always insulting.

Tarantino has been criticized for using certain elements of his movie for shock value since Reservoir Dogs. Too much violence. Too much feet. Too much cursing. Which is an okay criticism only if you give some credit to Tarantino for having narrative reasons for using these elements to tell his story. Claiming all these elements are just there for shock value is either cynical or just plain lazy.

Well considered? You spent a lot of time coming up with “Of course you can”? More than two minutes?

> If you watch the totality of Tarantino’s work, it is beyond any reasonable dispute that he’s in love with the word “nigger” to an extent that is, frankly, distracting. There’s nothing wrong with using the word to serve a narrative or thematic purpose, or in the context of it simply making a sense for a character to say it. But repeating a word 50 times when 25 could have done is a sign of a degree of laziness - and there’s a surprising amount of laziness in “Hateful Eight.”

Beyond any reasonable dispute? And yet there are many people who don’t agree with you. How did that happen?

Some people prefer not to see reason, perhaps.

Tarantino: “My films contain as many N-Words as nessecery. No more, no less.”

RickJay: “Just cut a few.”

Well, I’m coming late to the party, but I saw this last night. Loved the movie. But the main takeaway for me: one of the best closing exchanges of dialogue I have ever seen!
