The History Channel- Do They Do Any Research At All?

THC had a Walking with Jesus series a few years ago. I don’t remember how many episodes it was, but they re-air it every year around Easter time. One of my professors was asked to be an expert on one of the episodes (his book Excavating Jesus co-written with John Dominic Crossan had recently been published). He said that it was a very frustrating experience, and described one shot where he had mangled a bit of information. He said that he made a mistake, and would like to re-do it. The producer told him that he didn’t want to because Dr. Reed had looked “great” while he was walking and talking. He argued that he could walk the same again, and he wanted to reshoot. They refused, because they didn’t want to lose that shot.

I’ve never been able to view THC the same again. Oh, and their specials about the “End Times” and Satan really piss me off. The first, because the End Times was almost treated as fact. The second because they discussed Satan in literature and they were wrong, wrong, wrong, especially about the Romantics. This wasn’t a matter of a simple question of interpretation. This was completely mis-representing entire philosophical underpinnings.

Fah! We already know of your silly alien plans because of the Not-Really-Lost, Just-Misplaced works of Nostradamus. Which has already been aired.

It was truly a Modern Marvel.
