And he was born with it, too! Seventeen year old [Aaron Zaggy](http://www.wltx.com/FYI/story.aspx?storyid=54322) decided he’d spice up this years’s Homecoming elections by running for the position of Homecoming Queen. And won. According to the linked article he got a majority of the votes cast, though only about half the elegible students voted. (Gosh, that sounds familiar.) And now parents are complaining to the school board that this shouldn’t have happened, that some kind of apology is mandated, and other idiocy. :rolleyes: I want apologies from the parents involved, that they’re being such idiots. ---

I’d find this real funny, personally, if it happened back in my high school\*. I’m still trying to figure out what, precisely, the complainers want the board to apologize for. I assume they said yes because they didn’t think he’d win, which was stupid because everybody I know would vote for him. \*: Come to think of it, a guy did almost make the field hockey team the year after I graduated. He even volunteered to wear the skirt. ---

Our running back (university) beat out two other candidates for the Homecoming queen as a write-in candidate. Imagine how they felt. ---

I saw this too, and the outrage expressed by a former homecoming queen and some of the other women is really embarrassing. Why are they so upset? Isn’t equality what we have always wanted? ---

I’d like to think it’s a statement made by the students about the obsolete nature of stereotypical gender roles. That’s what I’d like to think. In fact, I’m going to think that, regardless of any evidence to the contrary. Thank you. ---

:rolleyes: It’s high school. If something isn’t a popularity contest, it’s a joke or an act of rebellion. This ticks all the boxes…of course he won! Vote for the dude= a chance to piss off the cheerleaders and their moms and it’s funny…win-win for 90% of the student body! Someone is upset their princess didn’t get a prize, everyone else just thinks it was funny. Grow up, get over yourselves and move on. ---

I haven’t been to an American high school, so I am bemused by some of the things I see in movies, but it seems reasonable to me that a Homecoming Queen competition would be reserved to female entrants, and the Homecoming King competition reserved to male entrants. But I can definitely understand why the parent of an upset child would complain, if it seems that long-standing expectations of some kind of competition are being ignored. ---

I suspect you’re correct, **Arnold Winkelried**. However, I’d think that the time to protest would have been when the request was approved, or even after that, but before the election. By it’s very nature no one could win the Homecoming election by running in secrecy. (Well, not without stuffing the ballot box, but I doubt that’s the case, here - if there were even a whiff of that I have to believe that the parents protesting would have been screaming that from the rafters.) ---

Back in the 60s, one of my university-teachers-to-be ran for the position of [Lucia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Lucia_Day) at his small rural school and won because, or so the story goes, he had the longest hair of all the candidates. Uproar ensued. In the end, he shared honours with the (female) runner-up. ---

Never underestimate the power of the protest vote. Well, when it comes to highschoolers, anyway. When only one person bothered to get enough signatures on the required petition to run for senior class president, and was therefore running unopposed, we ‘elected’ a fictitious fearless leader look alike named ‘Adolph Zimmerman’ through a write in campaign that promised outlandish things like putting the teachers in concentration camps and turning the Gym into an MX missile depot. ---
