I have never wanted to dance. Not even a little bit. It’s not that I’d like to, but can’t. It’s that I don’t even want to. I can’t comprehend the urge. Well. Anyone else? I ask because IRL whenever I’ve said this, I have inevitably gotten looks of incomprehension. But while I know most people like to dance, surely non-dance-liking-ness isn’t _that_ rare. Is it? I post here in order to find out. ---

(I should add–I’m actually very musical. I started out as a composition major. I’m constantly singing under my breath. Etc. So it’s not non-musicality that’s happening here. It’s non-danciness.) ---

Me, too. I will dance at weddings and whatnot sometimes, but I always feel silly and want to stop. This causes my wife nothing but consternation. She once tried to get me to learn ballroom dancing from videos. It turned into a big fight. She really likes to dance. ---

I don’t want to dance either! I used to get into fights with my best friend in high school because she loved to dance, and would pester hell out of me join her. Well, that was just not going to happen, although I was happy enough to sit around watching and talking to others while she danced. I was totally pissed at her when we went to Disney World for our graduation trip. They had these little areas set aside for dancing, so my friend went in there and started shaking her ass around. After about ten minutes, I was like, “We are at motherfucking Disney World, and you’re going to waste time doing what you do every single weekend?!” I also hated my wedding, in large part because I didn’t know what to do with people if we didn’t have dancing. The part where my husband and I had to slow dance alone was agonizing. ---

Yep. I’ve always thought this was more a male trait more than a female trait, but could be wrong. We could have a gender count here. ---

My dad hates dancing too so he had no interest in the father-daughter dance. And my husband’s sister didn’t have any dancing at her wedding either so it seems like their whole side of the family doesn’t like to dance. Female. ---

Wow, that’s incomprehensible to me. So you’re saying, not “I am tenaciously avoiding the social awkwardness of dancing around other people” but, in fact, “I don’t know what it is to hear music, or a rythym and feel an urge to move along with it.” Right? If so, I am your polar opposite. I have great difficulty remaining still in the presence of music, even just if it’s playing in my head, which is most of the time. It is as instantaneous and natural as breathing heavier when mocing upa staircase. My first career path was ballet, and for many years I was only happy when I was dancing. ---

Male. I detest dancing. It’s not because of awkwardness, or shyness, I just do not like the activity at all. It does nothing for me. It’s about as entertaining to me as, I dunno, putting 50 stepladders in a big room and making me, and everyone else, take turns climbing up and down them, for hours. ---

Another dance hater. Sure made high school dances, um, difficult. I LOVE music, just don’t want to dance. But I can tap my foot and bob my head like nobody’s business! ---

I love this thread. I get no enjoyment whatsoever from dancing. People get so offended that I won’t dance with my gf. She’s completely understanding, although would prefer some dancing now and then, doesn’t even bring it up anymore. Male ---
