There is no training to my knowledge that involves taking a single shot and then making a determination if it was successful. If an officer is confronted with a vehicle launching toward them that puts them in imminent danger. The response will be with multiple shots quickly grouped together in a pattern that will likely hit the suspect. Which is what happened.
I don’t understand why she chose to launch her car at an officer after being told to get out of the car. Maybe it was because her wife repeatedly yelled at her to drive.
Maybe it’s because ICE has a habit of “arresting” and illegally holding in custody people that are not undocumented aliens.
(I wouldn’t get out of the car if ICE ordered me to.)
That’s utterly irrelevant. That was murder whether he was trained to commit murder or not has no bearing on the law. When those shots were fired there was no imminent thread, the law is quite clear. If there is no imminent threat it’s not self defense it’s murder
The was murder carried out in broad daylight, on video, with witnesses.
Even if that was the case (which is a very very dubious assertion) it in no way means shooting the driver is a reasonable way to avert that danger. In that situation it clearly wasn’t. Shooting the driver was not “necessary to avert death or great bodily harm” so it’s not self defense.
I don’t understand why she chose to activate her lycanthropic powers and transform into a werewolf. Clearly, any competent law enforcement official would recognize that a slavering werewolf represents imminent danger to the community and would be justified in taking action in response.
What is the assumption an office supposed to make when confronted with someone driving at them while ignoring instructions to get out of the car? Jump out of the way and let the driver try to hit another agent?
We can no longer trust law enforcement. Before el donald, if you were arrested but went quietly, you could probably get yourself bailed out in a few hours and count on telling your side at a trial. Now, getting arrested means that you could disappear into some hell-hole thousands of miles away for months on end.
In this new world created by the orange one, it can make sense to try to escape when an officer tries to detain you. This is the reality of secret police.
In every police shooting case you hear about how LEO’s are faced with split-second life or death decisions. They are supposed to be trained in how to deal with those but, we should be careful to about second guessing the officer. We should put ourselves in his shoes.
It was mentioned somewhere that the one who shot her had been in ICE or the border patrol or something since the Obama administration. Suppose that, until a year ago, his work had not been real exciting. He had the training but never used it and basically forgot.
When el donald starts his second term, it all changes. Our LEO is no longer deep in the minutia of the different kind of visas. Due process is out the window. Suddenly, his job is to be a fascist thug. He doesn’t really have the instincts to deal with those SSLDD’s. The car is headed his way and he just reacts. He has to do something and chooses wrong.
Competence is carefully avoided. A refresher in the training for use of force and traffic stops is difficult to even ask for and even harder to get. They needed big bodies in masks ASAP.
Of course, in reality US police are trained * to be violent and paranoid thugs who casually kill people. And whose job isn’t even especially dangerous. The nonsense about having to make “split-second life or death” decisions is just their excuse for killing people “just in case”.
Literally, many are trained in Israel by the same people keeping a boot on the Palestinians, or by imported Israeli occupation troops. They are taught to look at the public as the enemy.
Yesterday, the NYT published a statement by Vance saying that ICE agents are immune. I don’t know exactly what that means in the US. As I understand it, there will be no legal review of the situation and the perpetrator will not face prosecution. How will the other ICE agents understand this? How will they behave, for example, towards demonstrators? And how will they behave towards the people who are being deported? Knowing that you are immune means that you will not be held accountable for your actions. That’s how it is in Russia…and in Iran. Now in the US too? How will this continue? And is there really no one in the GOP who will take action against this?
What additional facts could be relevant? What could this woman possibly have done to deserve to summary execution by somebody so terrified they managed to hold a cellphone and record video during the encounter. When, exactly, Dinsdale will you accept that there are crimes being committed by government employees as a means of oppressing people in the US.
The officer spent time positioning himself for the clear shot at an unarmed citizen who posed no threat to himself or others. Then showing intent he filmed the act of murdering the citizen.
Are you serious?
Yesterday, I got in my car and drove to my kid’s basketball game.
It’s amazing the cops didn’t pull me over, because obviously my intent was to drive through the school doors and down the hallway into the gym, crushing innocent children all the way!
Stupid, incompetent cops. How dare they just let me drive down the street.
(And, to answer your specific question, she was executing a three-point turn, obviously to drive AWAY from the officers, while her wife was loudly advising her to drive AWAY from the officers, moments after she told the murderer that she meant no harm.)
