I remember watching the game live and at the end was disgusted that the players did this. I did not like the man at all, but still thought it was a terrible thing to do and was not surprised in the least when he died a few weeks later.

From [wikipedia George Allen](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Allen_(American_football_coach))

> [@](#):
>
> He died on December 31, 1990, from ventricular fibrillation in his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California, at the age of 72. Shortly before his death, Allen noted that he had not been feeling well since some of his Long Beach State players dumped a Gatorade bucket filled with ice water on him following a season-ending victory over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on November 17, 1990 (he remarked that the university couldn’t afford actual Gatorade).
>
> The sports editor of the Long Beach State newspaper, the Daily Forty-Niner, was on the field that day and recalled that the temperature was in the 50s with a biting wind. Allen stayed on the field for media interviews for quite a while in his drenched clothing, and boarded the bus back to Long Beach State soaking wet.

> I think I know what he’s talking about. I’ll sometimes see things in my FB feed that were shared by a friend that tell some story about some awful or wonderful thing thing that happened with instructions saying to share it if you agree that it’s awful / good. The implication being that if you don’t share it you’re for puppy beating or against cops rescuing kittens or whatever.

Huh. That’s bullying now? I never share that crap, and never felt even the least bit pressured to do so. I thought most people just ignore it.

I also ignore it. I’m not the one who called it bullying, but that’s what I thought **kaylasdad99** was talking about, given the context. I could be mistaken.

I just got an e-mail saying members of the Canadian Forces should not engage in IBCs in uniform.

Or course back in February, I was on an exercise, in uniform, in Chisasibi. That was ice-buckety enough, thanks.

> I’m expecting the first death or injury from this challenge any day now. Not that I’m against it or that I think it’s inherently dangerous for an adult to do this _to themselves_, but you gotta know that some fool is going to figure out a way to injure himself or someone else with it.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame the ice bucket challenge for people getting hurt. Any time this many people try to do the same thing, people are going to get hurt. If you asked a million people to film themselves doing 10 jumping jacks, I’d bet you’d end up with at least 100 ER visits for anything from cardio events to sprained ankles to broken bones. Some will be flukes, some will be people falling down stairs or tripping over toys, some will be people inevitably ramping it up and falling off a second story roof or hood of a moving car. Dumping a bucket of (ice) water on your head isn’t going to kill a person, but getting that many people involved, well, something is always going to go wrong.

I don’t think you could get a million people to film themselves for a minute, standing still, without at least one finding a way to maim them self.

FTR, my sister managed to get the bucket dropped on her head. :smack: It’s kinda funny and upon rewatching it (over and over and over) you can see my 8 year old’s arms struggling with the bucket as my sister goes through her intro speech and by the time she’s ready to have the water dumped on her, my daughter’s arms are barely strong enough to lift it up and pour it and she just sort of lets it fall.

I wasn’t blaming it. Like I said, I don’t think it’s inherently dangerous. But any fad like this ends up being abused by idiots.

All these idiots doing the challenge are only doing it for the attention. If you would stop watching their videos the idiots would stop.

It is what I was talking about.

Yes, I ignore that kind of thing, too. However, a little homunculus in my subconscious (who looks a bit like Miss Grundy, from the Archie comic books) makes note of the people who post that kind of thing, and gives them a little sniff of disdain.
