Guess you guys don’t use html in the posts huh?
I’ll try this way to see if it works.
Guided By Voices is one of my favorite bands,
Jimmy Eat World is still sorta indie, and I also like them quite a bit.
I don’t listen to Queens of the Stone Age so often, but I’ve heard songs of their’s that I’ve liked.
what weasel, no Screeching Weasel?
I love things like this. I’m not 100% sure of the purity of the “indie” status of a couple of them, but they’re not something that’s mainstream hear it on the radio all over the place anyway.
Voltaire He’s got a hell of a voice, manages to avoid taking himself too seriously quite nicely, and he did a couple of songs about Star Trek. I love this man. He did some pretty ginchy animation too. I pimp this guy out all over the place. Seriously, go check it out.
The Cruxshadows are pretty good.
If I can recommend just a cd compilation, “a dark noel”, available only at Hot Topic, is totally worth the $6. Darkwave Christmas music. Both of the above are included on it. The Cruxshadows did a really nice cover of Happy Christmas (War is Over).
The rest I’m just listing band names. Most of them used to have stuff they’d put up on mp3.com, but that was temporarily non-existant last I saw, so unless they’ve put things on their main websites, there’s not a whole lot to go with. Some of them go through Projekt, and some I can’t for the life of me remember where they do cds through. So anyway.
Astral Grey
Bella Morte
Black Tape for a Blue Girl
Doppelganger
Drakenova
Some of Inkubus Sukkubus is pretty good, and some of it just makes me roll my eyes
Moonlight Awakening
Moonspell
Power Symphony
Rasputina was already mentioned, but I like them too
Silent Order
Xiphoid Process
I’m pretty fond of Kamelot too. They aren’t really indie indie, I don’t think, but they aren’t real big mainstream anyway.
This is more a grab-bag of underground stuff, rather than indy. It all rocks though.
At The Gates - Swedish death metal. They’re pretty big in the scene, but they’re good if you give them a chance. Slaughter of the Soul is their best album.
Converge - America’s premier metalcore band. Everything of theirs, with the sole exception of Killing and Caring, is golden.
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come is one of the best punk albums of the 90’s. The vocals might throw you off, but it’s a rewarding album to listen to.
Magnetic Fields - I would unreservedly recommend 69 Love Songs to everyone on the planet. The album covers a wide variety of music.
Low - uh… Low. The name fits them perfectly. They’re really reserved and quiet, but are good, I swear.
Frog Eyes - Weird rock band, but really fun. They’re not Zappa level wierd though.
Explosions In The Sky - Instrumental post-rock.
Do Make Say Think - These guys have never made two albums that sound the same. They’re instrumental post-rock too, but way better than anyone out there. Some of the members of Broken Social Scene are in here too.
Godspeed You Black Emperor - They build these long drones with gloomy, overtly polical sound clips that build into pure rock fury. Really good, A++.
Mogwai - More post-rock, they like to get noisy. Pick up Young Team
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - They were The Big Thing last year, but the beneath the hype was a great album (Source Codes and Tags) It’s nice when things turn out that way.
Liars - Snotty punks rock hard in their ironic way. They Threw Us In a Trench and Put a Monument on Top is recommended.
Drowningman - Their gimmick was being “the band that never got a chance”. They were sarcastic assholes. They’re metal-punk. Rock 'n Roll Killing Machine was thier best album.
Faith No More - These guys did more than sing Epic. Try some Angel Dust
Weakerthans - Nerdy rock with smart lyrics, kind of like The Magnetic Fields. Everything’s great, but earlier is better.
Kid Dakota - I don’t really want to get into this one. Gloomy pop songs.
Songs: Ohia - They have the same gloomy atmosphere as Kid Dakota, but they’re mostly acoustic rock.
The Epidemic - Subdued pop numbers.
Calexico - Southwestern rock, perhaps. I dunno.
Rodan - Slint for people who want more slint.
The Avalanches - It’s matmos that you can dance to.
The For Carnation - Another slint after-project. Pick up the self-titled.
Les Savy Fav - If you ever have the chance to see them live, do it.
Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons is terrific. One of the best 90’s pop albums. They draw a lot of comparisons to Sonic Youth.
Jim O’Rourke - Pop. Get Halfway To a Threeway. Rock. Get insignifigance
I Am Spoonbender - Wierd. They do electro-synth stuff. Fun.
McLusky - This is an album that the Pixies could have written. It should be boring, but it’s not. Seriously, if you like the Pixies, it’s almost like a disc of unreleased tracks. The singer doesn’t sound like Frank Black though. McLusky Does Dallas.
