The James Bond Film Festival. Part 1: Dr. No

Mahaloth: Whatever. I’d just rather this thread not turn into an “Every James Bond Movie” thread.

Gotta say I love the “Mango Tree” song. Or maybe I should say that its one of those tunes I catch myself singing in the shower sometimes! It’s just so dang catchy. Also the reggae version of “Three Blind Mice”. Hee Hee.

Also one of my favorite things about this movie is that it actually takes place in another country, Jamaica. (How recently had it been a country in 1962? It seems a very British sorta place, and I know it was a British colony for quite a while.) I hope this is a trend that is carried through to future movies, as most movies seem to take place in the US or UK. Seeing other countries is cool!

Also, nice to see they named the movie “Dr. No” instead of just “James Bond 007”. Gives hope that they might adapt other books in Ian Fleming’s series.

This is a great idea for a thread series! I wish I’d thought of it.

The casting is openly racist: Zena Marshall as Miss Taro doesn’t look the slightest bit Chinese, yet they have two Chinese women in minor roles. This reflects the standard practice of the time to have any important minority role played by a white person in makeup, but to have servants and such played by people of the correct ethnicity.

The plot follows the book fairly closely with minor changes. The biggest changes are nuclear reactor (not present in the book), Dr. No’s ultimate demise, and the end of the “gauntlet” (Bond fights off a giant squid using a homemade spear and a hand knife.)

A wonderful bit of old-fashioned arrogance:

As Bond and Quarrel hide out on Crab Key. Bond spends the night with his arm around the girl, Quarrel gets to guard the boat. Then on awakening , I think Bond’s first words to Quarrel are “Fetch my shoes.”

I cracked up when I noticed that. How very British.

IIRC, Honey Ryder was Honeychile Ryder in the book.

FWIW.

Sir Rhosis

OH MY GOD! Johnny, I had no idea you were doing this. I’ve been working on watching all the Bond films - in order - for a while now (although I am only up to Diamonds Are Forever). Great minds think alike! This is a great idea!

I’ll have to re-post my “Bond Theme Songs” thread which got lost in the Winter of our Missed Content.

Esprix

Thanks, Esprit!

I’ll have a thread on On Her Majesty’s Secret Service next week, and Diamonds Are Forever the week after that. Unless I double-up.

Oops… EspriX.

Sorry about that.
