The Kindness of Strangers

A stranger named Zoe once sent me a book when I was feeling really bad. It cheered me up before I even opened it, and I still continue to feel special every time I see it on the shelf. Just as nice was the little note that came with it. I have it stuck on my bedroom mirror so that I can see myself smiling when I read it. My sister, who is a Doper, saw it when she came to visit and is now jealous.

Many strangers have done nice things for me, but I have a hard time thinking of a particular incident (I really should keep a journal or something because I always have a hard time remembering stuff. That’s why I rarely post on these “When was the last time” kind of threads).

I do remember I was on a plane a couple of years ago and had this woman sitting next to me. For some reason, she felt compelled to do my seltbelt for me and wake me up when the flight attendant was distributing food. She also gave me some gum and did some other unexpected “nice” things. I dunno…she just seemed very motherly and gentle. I felt like she cared for me during the whole flight. (I felt strange afterwards, though, like maybe I looked vunerable and helpless.)

I know it’s not that big of a deal, especially when compared to the “bigger” things people have done for me, and yet it was the first thing I thought of when I opened the thread.

But you guys should have seen the thank you card Monstro sent me!!! It is like no other ever!

I am loving your stories. Please post more. I need a copy of this to keep with me when I’m ready to give up on people.
