You know the rules. Vote for the preferred song, and we eliminate the losers until one song is left. Selection committee notes: I took the 22 automatic bids (songs that charted in the US) and seeded them based on chart position. The four #1 seeds were 4 of the 5 US Top 10 hits. I then added in the at large bids (songs I happen to like) and seeded them randomly (pointing at a piece of paper with my eyes closed). Lots of room for upsets. Yes, I’m not big fan of the RCA concept album period, so that’s underrepresented. Voting closes 11 pm PDT Wednesday 4/23. **Ray Davies bracket** 1. You Really Got Me vs. 2. Low Budget 3. Lola vs. 4.
It’s Jim Rodford’s (bassist since 1978) nickname. I stuck it in there as a placeholder as I wasn’t sure how to spell Quaife. Then I forgot to go back and change it.
“Dedicated Follower of Fashion” vs. “Shangri-La”??? Ouch! Impossible!
Heh heh. Payback for forcing me to choose between “My Generation” and “The Real Me” in the opening round of Who Madness 🆒
I’m ASTONISHED there wasn’t more from “Village Green Preservation Society”! I’d have taken “Steam Powered Trains,” “Big Sky” or “Animal Farm” or “Wicked Annabella” over half the songs on that list.
I’m a second generation Kinks fan, having gotten into them in high school (Low Budget/One For The Road/Give The People What They Want/State of Confusion were the albums released in that time frame) so VGPS was a later acquisition for me. I was trying to pick 2 or 3 songs from each album to spread the choices over their entire career. I was surprised to realize just how high-school-centric my final list was (6 from “Low Budget”, 5 from GTPWTW, 5 from “State of Confusion” and that was after discarding "Cliches of the World (B Movie)). Still, “Village Green” probably deserves to get more than the same number of slots as “Phobia”. “Do You Remember Walter?” made the final list, but didn’t get randomly selected.
