It’s an extension of their name for this thing — [https://goo.gl/images/D2Ktgu](https://goo.gl/images/D2Ktgu) — which is like something we might call a type of ski mask or balaclava helmet without the mouth cover.

To them, wearing this makes you look like a monkey.

They are a knit cap, or a stocking cap. If they are heavier and more serious, then they may be a watch cap.

Torques, being metal, are actually counter-indicated to wear around your neck on a cold winter’s day in Canada. Toques, on the other hand, are quite beneficial. 🙂

If you’re using an iPhone, you can push and hold the “e” button, and up comes a menu of e’s with accents. Just slide your finger to the appropriate one and: “Voilà: touché!”

When I was a kid, it was always toboggan, or sometimes 'boggan. (The short version might have been a family thing.) I can’t remember hearing anyone ever use a different term at home (parents from eastern Kentucky) or at school (the Chicago-land area).

Round these 'ere parts [wearing a bogan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogan) is not an option, fashionwise or any other.
