I like the purple one in the OP’s second link. It’s pretty, and it looks like actual clothes. Clear Classical influences, and a nice interplay of color and texture.

And **xanthous** , am I the only one who finds the concept of a Simplicity sewing pattern for an MC Hammer outfit amusing? I wouldn’t have thought there’d be much overlap between the sew-it-yourself crowd and the Hammer fandom.

Since this is becoming a discussion of aesthetics, let’s strut it down the runway to Cafe Society.

ETA: That is not a good look for the _Vogue_ editor.

These _are_ the Winter collections! They are being shown now so clients of _haute couture_ can order their Winter wardrobes now. Only the richest of the rich\* can afford to buy this stuff; and the outfits will be tailored for them. Top too transparent? Skirt too short? All will be adjusted as _madame_ wishes.

The models are looking as they are paid to look–each designer has a “concept” for his collection. The extreme makeup & hairdos and those silly hats are just for show. (Although their expressions might be affected by the shoes–which never really fit.) Afterwards, the girls will wash off the makeup & put on their t-shirts & jeans.

The ready-to-wear shows are closer to what we’ll see in the stores. That’s the expensive ready-to-wear–cheaper knock-offs will also appear.

- Are the richest of the rich even buying as much as they used to? This was [Christian Lacroix’s](http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/50314,news,lacroix-fights-closure-in-style-megan-fox-blanchett-armani-chanel-paris)last _haute couture_ show; he can’t afford to do it any more.

Haute Couture is meant as art. Art as expressed through fabric, sewing techniques, hairstyles and makeup to go with the clothing. It is not meant to be practical or even aesthetically pleasing on a person (just like Picasso’s Guernica isn’t necessarily aesthetically pleasing).

The link has changed today. [This](http://imgs.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2009/07/07/ba-topshots-fash_0500348374.jpg) is the one I was referring to in the second link in my OP.

Tell me about it! The softness, contrasted with the graphic plasticity of the belt? Yum.
