It’s not “woke.”

Merriam Webster says,

1 a : aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues

Seems to fit to me.

And that “consideration” is often no more than a right-wing snarl-word. And the “awareness” in definition 1. is often no more than self-righteous noise. An appointed VA official had to weigh taking the picture down vs keeping it up, based on the relative power of elected officials on opposing sides of the “woke” spectrum.

But the abysmal quality of care received by veterans? All three officials seem unified about that issue.

Taking the picture down was woke, and that’s a good thing.

If you read the WaPo piece above, you’ll see that following the close of the war, this behavior was fairly common, and was tolerated due to what our “brave young boys” had been through. But tolerated for a few days at the end of the war isn’t the same as “not regularly condemned.”

There were instances where a whole lot more was “tolerated.”

a three-night orgy of vandalism, looting, assault, robbery, rape and murder. By the time the “Peace Riots” burned themselves out on Friday morning, 13 people were dead, at least six women had been raped, 1,059 people were injured…

…No officials, civilian or military, were ever punished or even reprimanded. A grand jury investigation was a farce. The city simply tried to pretend the riots never happened.

Though probably to a much lesser extent, Halifax underwent a similar experience:
