There are seven Sopwith Camels in existence. All are in in museums. There are a few replicas flying. Any Fokker triplane you see is a replica, there are no authentic examples, the last was destroyed in a bombing raid in World War II. There are still some real Spads flying.
I didn’t really look at the news reports when this thread was up. But I’m here talking with my parents as I visit them here in Oswego on my vacation, and they’re still talking about this. The plane came down less than a mile from their house! Quite a bit of excitement for this little town … My father, who has lived here for about a billion years and knows all the back roads, found one that hadn’t been blocked off by the police & could get him to a spot where he could see what was going on. The fire trucks arrived in plenty of time to have saved the plane, but couldn’t get close enough to help because of the muddy field, he says.
Yup. Saw John at a party recently back home, and that was the case. They actually had plenty of time to offload luggage and everything before the fire got really serious. It was just that the trucks couldn’t get to the plane.
