the lowest you ever felt after your team lost

Only two dollars. I still have the OTB ticket. Maybe I can auction it at e-bay.

Actually, for the All-Century Team, Lou Gehrig recieved the most votes. And the only voting part IIRC was narrowing down the 100 greatest to the 30-man roster for the All-Century Team.

I’m not sure who picked the 100 greatest (The Sporting News leaps to mind), but I don’t remember it being a vote. I could be wrong.

Sorry to stay off topic, but I looked and it was The Sporting News that picked the 100 greatest players list. They had Eckersley at 98. The thing is, there were a lot of players that were great that were not first ballot inductees. If my memory serves me right, someone like Hank Aaron was not a first ballot. I tried to find out, but I couldn’t find out who all was first and who wasn’t. Anyway, here is the link on Eckersley.

Wow, Hank Aaron wasn’t first ballot? That’s odd. You’d think the Home Run king would be voted in ASAP, especially as a member of the 3000 hit club in addition to the HRs.

Thanks for the link TexasSpur

Sorry for the hijack, everyone.

I’m not sure it was Hank Aaron, but I know there was someone big like him that wasn’t.

Now that I think of it, I believe Goose Goslin is an example of one of the 100 greatest that didn’t get elected on the first ballot. IIRC correctly, it was many years before he was recognized and voted in. Yet there he is, 100 greatest.

So maybe Eckersley’s chances aren’t so hot after all.

Makes me wonder about St Louis fans’ (and I am one of them) assertions that Ozzie Smith is a shoe-in.

Ok, I’m done. Sorry for hijacking again.

I would just like to say that I read the title to this thread as Iowest… you know, most like Iowa.

I’ll be going now.

::slinkso ut the back way::

Yeah, I would have to agree beatle even though I wasn’t a major Houston fan, I thought that was one of the most humiliating things I have ever seen. I was 9 at the time and I remember setting on my stairs crying about it.

I had lost all respect for the Oilers when they threatened to move to Jacksonville in 1985 IIRC. Bud Adams (that freaking forkhead of a shizer) forced Astrodome USA to take out the scoreboard. Loser. Hope you enjoy Nashville! Putz.

I taped it a couple of months ago when they played it on ESPN classic. Remind me at the next Doper Gathering (my BBQ perhaps) I will get you a copy.

Um, was it Game 6 that same year when Ozzie Smith took Niedenfuer deep for his first home run hit lefthanded?

That was even worse, IMHO. At least Clark was a power hitter.
These memories sucked, too. It’s just that my beloved UCLA Bruins and California Angels meant more to me than the Dodgers (not by much in the case of the Angels).

FA Cup semi-final, Oldham Athletic vs Manchester Utd. Oldham, my team and perennial underachievers, took a surprise lead in extra-time through mulleted psycho Neil Pointon. Graeme Sharp then missed a sitter - allowing Mark Hughes to score a last-second equaliser past Jon Hallworth.

Okay, we didn’t lose, but that body-blow was the end. We lost the replay 4-1, then a physically shattered team gave up the ghost and was relegated to the first division.

Actually, we both got it wrong. Ozzie’s heroics were in Game 5, Jack Clark’s in Game 6.

Oh Tom, poor Tom…

That was bad, yep. I heard that they had the freaking World Series trophy outside the locker room going into the ninth. Stinking Mesa. As soon as they gave him the ball, I knew it was over (likewise Nagy in the 12th.) I was depressed for weeks, and I still hate that little sh*t Craig Counsell who hit the game-winning sacrifice. He plays for the Diamondbacks now, which means I have to see him with unfortunate frequency. I like the DBacks, but I’ll always hate him. Freakin’ pinhead in his oversized batting helmet…
