Just a little additional ignorance fighting…Jack is almost a bourbon, the big difference is that Jack is charcoal filtered, something known as the Lincoln County Process. Take away the charcoal and Jack would technically be a bourbon but as it stands it’s a Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey. ---

Here is the Straight Dope on bourbon: It doens’t HAVE to be made in Kentucky, but most of it IS, so that’s where the confusion comes in. In order to be called “bourbon,” it has to meet specific criteria (and here I quote the [Kentucky Encyclopedia](http://kyenc.msudev.com/entry/b/BOURB01.html): > [@](#): > > , bourbon is made from a fermented mash containing at least fifty-one percent corn and lesser amounts of wheat, rye, and barley, along with yeast and distilled limestone water; it is distilled at no more than 160 proof and aged in charred oak barrels, a process that gives the bourbon its reddish color and unique taste.
