The Migraine Thread

StGermain, I used to take amitriptyline as a preventative, and I had to take it for a while (several days, at least) before it started to help. Did your doctor prescribe it to prevent or to abort migraines? I’ve never heard of it being prescribed to get rid of a migraine once it’s there.

StGermain - I feel SO bad for you. I didn’t mean to ignore your OP the way I did, but porcupine’s headache sounded so much like what the hubby gets that I sort of focused on just that. Any news on the MRI yet?

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I went to the doctor for a sinus infection last month because it caused a headache so intense it woke me up. It was awful. After probing me about it, my doctor said it was a migraine. First ever (that I know of) and I’m 35. My doctor suggested I ask my parents about a history. My mom reported that she thinks she’s had a few, also triggered by sinus problems.

I may never have another one. I always thought if you were a migraine sufferer you’d get them with some regularity, but apparently not always.

Porcupine - I think the idea was that the Imitrex shot was supposed to do the headache in, and the amitriptyline was to prevent them from coning back. The problem is. neither the Imitrex shot, nor the pills, kept it gone. They wear off and I’m back to wear I started. Tonight I’ll take the Imitrex keeping it at bay and the amitriptyline at bedtime. Maybe if I can keep it gone long enough it’ll stop.

LifeOnWry - No problem. I’m very glad this migraine isn’t the debilitating sort. It hurts, and it’s annoying, but I’m not desperate. Yet.

Just checking in.
Another lifelong migraine sufferer here.

I take 200 mgs of Topamax daily for the prevention of migraines, and use the Imitrex injections for when I do get one.

Yes, the hibernation factor sounds about right. Just leave me alone in the dark, with a bucket by the bed.
Even my hair hurts.

And the migraine hangover the next day. It’s all so familiar.
