The morons are on the march, part 42,527 (Frisco, TX edition)

This is the sort of art you expect to see at a museum? I’m sorry, but this is the sort of art I expect to see Sunday afternoon at a garage sale. Maybe I just missed the cowboy wing of the Metropolitan Museum of art.

A general art museum is going to have a variety of works from a variety of time periods, as opposed to a modern art museum, for example. Nudes have an incredibly long and respected history in art, one has to be a complete dunce to think that a decent museum will not include any nude depictions.

To a bullfight itself. Because it is art itself, even outside of Spain. Not an artist’s renditioning of it as a sculpture, painting, or a photograph. Or in a US case, the excellent, detailed video of one. Or even a day trip to a bull ring across border, without the parents knowing of a specific intention to go to a bullfight. Would that be enough for disciplinary action of a teacher?

This is more like the parents approving the trip to the bullfight, not realizing the bull dies at the end, then getting all pissed off their kid had to see it.

Care to give a real reason you think the two things are different? I don’t find naked bodies immoral, I think it’s immoral to fire a good teacher (like we have so many of them to spare), I’d prefer my kids to see great art than read pap. Why is this parent’s opinion more worthy than mine?

How about this for a school policy. “No student shall be allowed on any field trip without being accompanied by a parent/guardian under any circumstances. Parents shall blindfold their children when moving between rooms/areas. Parents shall have the option of removing said blindfolds after inpecting the new room for anything they find objectionable.” Or take it further; “All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian throught the schoolday. Parents must sit with their children during all classes. Due to liablily reasons any child whose parents/guardians are unable/unwilling to spend evey moment they’re on school propery with them will be unable to attend school.”

I believe that my daughter was in the fifth grade (possibly fourth or sixth) when I bought her a copy of Our Bodies, Our Selves and let her keep it in her room. For those who haven’t read this book, it is really written for adults, but it does have lots of information that girls should know. I told her that I didn’t necessarily agree with everything in the book, but that I recommended specific chapters. This embarrassed her, but she did read that book into pieces.

Not every Texas parent is a social conservative. Some people in Dallas and Fort Worth (can’t speak for other towns) are saying that the DISD or the FWISD should snatch this teacher up, as there’s a perpetual shortage of good teachers in this area.

From what I read in the Dallas Morning News, the exposure to the nude was quite accidental. Still, if my daughter had come home with a permission slip for a field triip to a museum, I would expect a few nudes to be in the museum.

I never did. I remember pictures in junior high art books. But not 5th grade field trips.

Well then, as I’ve always maintained, since it was not intentional, this is clearly unfair. A “sorry” and “I won’t let it happen again should suffice.”

I just went to the Dallas Museum of Art this January and I can’t think of anything I saw there that wouldn’t be appropriate for a six year old to view. Though I imagine the child would have been bored silly. I had been to a few galleries over the years but this was the first time I had been to an honest to god art museum in nearly 20 years. Even though I’m not among the hip arty Dopers I knew full well that art museums tend to have depictions of nude human beings.

The school sent out permission slips but they can’t help it if people are ignorant to the fact that most art museums will have imagines of nude men and women. Also, for those of you dissing Texas again I lived in the D/FW area for many years, and quite frankly I am surprised to hear of a teacher getting in trouble for something so silly.

I’m not surprised that a parent might object. Some parents object to evolution being taught in biology, Harry Potter being available at the library, or Greek mythology being taught in the 9th grade, but you can generally find people like that in most states.

Marc

Sorry you had such a stunted childhood. But at least you like to see bulls die.

Sacre bleu! Even here in Gomorrah we don’t see a lot of topless Virgin Marys and bottomless Jesuses on display. You sure those weren’t demigoddesses and putti?

My family took a long vacation through Europe when I was in fifth grade. My parents too me and my two younger brothers to a lot of museums and the stuff we saw included both Michaelangelo’s David in Florence and the Sistene Chapel in Rome (we saw countless other nude statues and paintings as well). Was it immoral for my parents to do that, UB?

sheesh…its stuff like this…and folks like unregistered bull…that make me embarrased to be a Texan some times. My father is a baptist preacher and I dont think he would have been upset by that…art musieums have nudes in them…all of them do…even in Texas…

And unfortunately we have little pockets of ignorant backwards people in this state…in areas 50 years ago wouldnt have thought twice about something like this but have a newly found ignorance brought on by being raised in the worst education system in the country…and unfortunately they think this IS the normal “real world” response to students seeing a nude statue.

It’s incidents like this that make me glad I pulled my kid out of the public schools as these vocal idiots are gaining ground.

Hey, I’m a New Mexican in Texas. Not some pinche Tejano, hue.

Am I the only person who suspects **Unregistered Bull ** is the parent of a traumatized 5th grader in Frisco Texas?

Really?

We’re talking about art. Statues, paintings and what not. We’re not talking about anything sexually explicit. It’s the Hustler museum, fer chrissakes. They weren’t being shown photos from Juggs magazine.

Crap. It’s NOT the…well, you understand.

Wow, and here I remember kids in the 3rd grade cracking sex jokes (well mostly penis jokes anyway). Does Texas have sex education and if so at what age?

Not seeing Greek statues with little peckers and female boobies on field trip while a pre-pubescent male, doesn’t really stunt a childhood IMO.

I’ve seen bulls killed on the slaughter floor. It is just normal, everyday things. Not art.

A bullfight with its beautiful pageantry, costumes, animals, and display of human and animal skill that I and others find to be art.

I don’t really have a problem with bull fighting, but seems…strange…to talk about the animal’s skill as if it were a competitor and not a captive animal.

Shit for brains, I was talking about the huge picture of cunt that Lefthand was bragging about in is hip, cool, modern art museum. I can find the artistic value in a lot of art. Even the shit that got the lady in trouble in Frisco. But somethings, like huge pictures of a cunt, just aren’t appropriate for fifth graders. And it’s probably art.
