**Grrr** is on the mark re raisins pretending to be chocolate chips. For years, my wife assumed that I don’t like raisins. In fact, I do like eating raisins in everything from cake to trail mix. I just hold a lifetime grudge against them because they are so often deceitful.

Ooh! Ooh! I know this one! Ignore the rule that chocolate chip cookies are supposed to be at least a _little_ moist and chewy, and make them explode into cookie molecules as soon as you bite them.

Lol, i like crunchy cookies. I dislike the store-bought ones that are pumped full of humunctants and are “soft” for no apparent reason. And i love [Tates chocolate chip cookies](https://www.tatesbakeshop.com/), which taste like butter and chocolate and browned.

I saw a T-shirt once that read, “Oatmeal raisin cookies are why I have trust issues.”

I think about that shirt a lot.

Crispy chocolate chip cookies are my favorite!

I agree that Turkish Delight is perhaps oversold in that book, but it’s reasonable. Though last time I ate it a couple of months ago, it took out a crown! But I like the taste of rose water (I think that’s the classic flavor). Still, I’ll probably take a Snickers over it.

I agree about the Mexican pastries, though I think that’s a matter of expectation and what you’re used to. I live a block from a Mexican bakery, and my kids love it, but it’s all too dry for me, except for tres ledgers, which goes exactly opposite and it among the desserts of the gods.

> While most everything else from there is fantastic, the Turkish Delight (lokum)was underwhelming to my kids to say the least. I recall there being an “Edmund did all that bad stuff for THIS?” comment at one point.

I’ve had it a few times. The first time I tried it as a kid, I didn’t shout, “What the fuck is this shit?” but only because I didn’t know the words. It was awful.

But a few years back we ate at a wonderful Middle Eastern restaurant, and for dessert we got tiny cups of Turkish coffee and pistachio Turkish delight. It was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten: the overwhelming bitterness of the coffee tempered and cooled by the chill sweet of the candy, and everything supremely fragrant.

Oreos were made with lard for a long time so weren’t kosher. And Hydrox actually came first. But I was a kid and I wanted Oreos because everybody knew those were good cookies and no one wanted Hydrox. I think my mother thought enjoyment of life was bad for me. They weren’t really much different but I think Oreos actually did taste better.

Whereas my mother made a huge big deal about Hydrox being the delicious kind, Oreo the pale and bad imitation. Still, since Oreos were cheaper that’s what we usually had. I couldn’t and don’t see her point, but whatever, they do taste somewhat different. I suspect Hydrox are less sweet.

Speaking of disappointing desserts with extremely oversold names like Turkish Delight, how about that dessert staple of midwestern potlucks, ambrosia? [Food of the gods](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrosia)? Minor gods, without very good taste, maybe. [Conferring longevity or immortality upon whoever consume[s] it?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambrosia) Not if you make a habit of it; just the opposite, in fact!

Maybe it’s just me-- I’ve never liked marshmallow-based desserts. Rice Krispies treats? Sure, let’s take two of the most bland ingredients on the planet: puffed rice and marshmallows, and make boring, overly chewy rectangles that are a chore to eat.

I didn’t even particularly like s’mores as a kid- I considered them a crime against chocolate.

The dessert that disappoints me is the kind a restaurant serves with the raspberry coulis or the chocolate sauce directly on the plate _under_ the dessert proper. Because they never bring a privacy screen, so you can get away with picking up the plate and licking it clean.

I always tasted a hint of coconut in Hydrox cookies (which is why I preferred them).

Well, I know ambrosia is often referred to as ‘ambrosia salad’, but is something full of marshmallows, Reddi-Whip and sweetened coconut not also a dessert?

I feel we may be getting into dangerous territory similar to the old “is a hot dog a sandwich?” debate 😏

I once ordered a cheesecake at a restaurant that turned out to be memorably bad. I think they forgot the cheese. It tasted like a glob of flan over a crust.
