A few years ago I went to a Burns Supper in Seattle. It was hosted at a James Beard-winning restaurant whose chef made the haggis from scratch from a lamb he slaughtered himself. It was delicious. The dessrert, however, was his take on cranachan, which consisted of a scoop of whipped cream on a plate with some granola scattered around it. I was told there was honey and scotch whipped into the cream. I could taste neither. ---

(I know I’m going to irk a lot of people but here goes.) Pineapple upside down cake. I like pineapples. I like cake. But the combination is just inedible. Blyeaaah. ---

Several years ago, my sister had a craving for cake which is not my fav dessert, so she went to a Susie Cakes because she could get it by the slice. She got two slices for her and one for me. And all three slices were so bland and flavorless and just _bad._ The place was hopping. I couldn’t understand it – unless everybody there were first timers like us. We certainly never went back. ---

There’s a store called Lokum that has at least two locations on California’s central coast that sells coffee and Turkish desserts. There is a huge display of various flavors of baklava and Turkish delight that are cut off loaves to order. In the very back, there is a bucket of pale, individually wrapped cubes labeled “Narnia Delights”. I’ve never seen anybody buy those. ---

I’ve probably never had good Turkish Delight. The stuff I had was not pleasant. The chocolate coated “Big Turk” bar sold in Canada even worse. I’m sure some authentic versions must be better. I love South Asian food. I do not like the hot and sour tamarind candies. Nor do I see what attracts folks to salty Dutch or Danish licorice. TimTams are okay, but I don’t really understand the Australian nostalgia not would sipping tea or coffee through them improve either. The combination of sweet and salty works for me some of the time. Yes to kettle corn or salted caramel ice cream. No to chocolate covered pretzels or bacon. I like many pastries but Boston Creme and butter tarts don’t do anything for me, even if the latter are a Canadian specialty. Fruit pies are good, but no rhubarb mixes please. The appeal of durian is lost on me. ---

We finally found some Hydrox cookies at our Menards home improvement store (they have a small grocery section, with decent prices); our local grocery stores just don’t bother with them. I was kind of excited to try them again after so many years. Nope. I threw them away about a quarter of the way through; the taste was just off to me. Sorry, Hydrox lovers. The absolutely worst dessert I’ve ever had was at a potluck at work. It was a lovely looking pan of bars, with a crumbly cookie crust, a creamy filling, and some kind of coconut topping. My coworker and I both took a bite at the same time, and all we could taste was lard. Rancid lard. That was the creamy filling. We both spit that first bite out, and didn’t even finish anything else on our plates. ---
