> Would you ride in a trunk? Transport a child there? A trunk isn’t ventilated, isn’t heated/cooled, is right above the exhaust that may be leaking. A dog is a living, breathing creature deserving of a habitat that supports life, not suffocates it or freezes/cooks it.

If it’s right above an exhaust that may be leaking, the driver has more to worry about than the dog. Mainly, the driver.

> While bagging my purchases at a grocery store, I saw a man loudly ridicule a woman in front of her children for using food stamps while several of his pals looked on and laughed. An employee came over and told them to be quiet. I wish he’d thrown them out instead. ☹

I’m gonna counterpoint this post.

I was checking my Facebook the other day and saw a former part-time classmate posted this gem:

To all you fuckers who knock people getting food stamps, FUCK YOU!!! Guess what I don’t have an iPhone, but I got a smartphone!! Shit guess what I am a stay at home mom, who’s husband works over 40 hours a week, but I help out with a owner\operator with paperwork, so Fuck you all who pay a MAX OF 40 fucking dollars a year for snap benefits. Try researching where you’re fucking money actually goes, cuz barely any.goes to food stamps!!! When you see me in line at Wal-Mart or wherever paying for my groceries with food stamps and I got a smartphone, or a nicer car than you, keep your comments to yourself or say them to My face, I will put you in your fucking place!! Facebook is not for your whiny ass bullshit cuz you want people to feel sorry for you That you ain’t getting child support cuz you got prego by a fucking dead beat, guess what I did too but Shit happens get the Fuck over it and don’t spread your legs and quit saying you paying for others to put food on the table when your sorry ass ain’t getting food stamps,.don’t put that on the people.trying.to.make it!!! FUCK YOU BITCHES!!!
Now, I say “part-time” because she only attended school on and off and totally screwed off when she did show up. She was a gutter-slut pothead who had an abortion. She ended up dropping out of HS.

Now she has four kids and is a stay at home mom a few towns over from me. Obviously, they are strapped for cash and have to make use of government assistance.

BUT, she does indeed drive a nice, newer car, has a smart-phone, was bragging earlier about drinking a case of pop/soda a day (barf), and still smokes. The kicker was that, even though I haven’t seen her in ten years I have a very keen eye for faces and I happened to see her in a CASINO of all places with a beer in her hand not too long ago.

Some clowns go on to back her up in their comments and one says how it’s possible to have a smartphone and a new car when you are on stamps, it was just a matter of managing one’s money.

To me this seems like a flagrant misuse of assistance, I wanted to call her out but I don’t think any of my arguments would have held any water with such a moron.

It didn’t take me long to decide that that was one of the most disgraceful and disgusting things I’ve ever seen.

I haven’t got anything to match the ‘running over kittens’ story and frankly I’m glad of it.

I guess mine would be the couple of times I’ve seen guys masturbating in public, once in Amsterdam, the other alongside a motorway in France. Didn’t see it myself, but an Irish girl I knew who worked in a Paris bar told me that one time she ended up on the Metro next to a guy who was whacking off. By the time she realized what was going on, she ended up, er…splattered. Ugh.

At a fair in the state I live in I once saw a guy wearing a T-shirt that boldly stated: “I may not be Mr. Right but I’ll f\*ck you until he comes along”. Hey, at least you couldn’t say the guy wasn’t up front about his intentions!

And you just know they fly them for the brownie points they get with a certain crowd. But they never, ever take them down in the rain or the dark, and the flags look like shit now (but are still flying!). And its like, if you’re going to fly the damn thing and show off what a patriotic business you are, learn the fucking rules and fly your flag respectfully.
>
> It’s hardly the most disgraceful thing I’ve ever seen, but it does irritate me.

I couldn’t agree more. I fly a U.S. flag at home but I try to follow the rules when doing so - not at night, and certainly not during inclement weather (especially rain). I’ve seen flags that look like they’ve been displayed outside for YEARS. You just know that people like that tend to wrap themselves in the flag but then they can’t bother themselves to display it properly. That sort of thing doesn’t bother me all _that_ much but I do think it’s kind of stupid.

One evening several years ago, literally the day before Thanksgiving, I went to one such store (one of the more expensive ones) just before closing time. Yeah, that’s pretty bad. I saw something like this just the other day - a bunch of baguettes (there was a sandwich shop across the street) thrown into a garbage can. I thought much the same thing you did - “All the homeless people in town and THAT’s the best you can do with some unused bread?” Pitiful.

A few months ago a friend of mine went on a stag night. The groom was dressed in a costume: Cock Man! Cock Man is pretty much like Superman, only…well, he’s got a little fake penis tacked onto his Y-Fronts. Hey, it was a stag. Don’t judge.

So anyway my friend, his friends, and, of course, Cock Man, were having a few drinks at a bar when they decided to go outside for a smoke. A middle-aged woman walked past and, entirely unbidden, dropped to her knees in front of Cock Man, put the fake cock in her mouth and mimed giving him a blow job.

Her 10-year-old son was standing right behind her.

The reason we find such abhorrent and inhumane conditions in factory farms is because we choose to pretend that the animals we consume are treated well. Less than four generations ago we raised and killed our own and we certainly aren’t healthier now for our ignorance.
>
> Hunted animals killed humanely have a far better existence, is the takeaway.
> (sorry for the hijack; if this needs it’s own thread, I’ll participate with cites and stats)

You’re right. And I’m “part of the problem” because I haven’t yet gotten to the point where I’ve sworn off all meat (though I’m working my way to that point. I think). My big beef, though, is with people who kill “for the fun of it.” That REALLY sticks in my craw. Just within the last week, or so, I saw a photo of a fellow in North Carolina who was, apparently, all proud of himself for taking down a 500 lb. boar that had “evaded capture for years.” So proud of himself, yeah - with his high-powered weapon that could probably discharge 100 bullets per minute, or something like that. Then just the other day a touching story about a man in The Netherlands stricken with cancer whose wish was to go back to the giraffe enclosure at the Rotterdam Zoo where he was greeted, tenderly, by the giraffes he cleaned the enclosure of for about a quarter of a century. Later that day I saw a photo of some woman - so proud of _her_self with her high-powered rifle - sitting atop a dead giraffe and grinning like an idiot. I think it’s a crying shame the way we treat animals and you’re absolutely right - the way the poor ones who are prepared for our meals are treated before they’re killed is absolutely appalling.

Okay, not _certain_ that the guy was a drug addict, but he looked like he had “meth mouth.” My wife and I were at a local fairground and these two young women (many, no doubt, would argue that they were still girls) were crawling all over this guy who appeared to _easily_ be 15 to 20 years the girls’ senior and he was soaking it all in. A woman nearby who we _think_ (but aren’t sure) was their mother watched benignly (when she watched at all) while _they_ crawled and _he_ groped. Disgusting. But I’ve long since learned that there are many people “out there” who don’t exactly follow the advice of “Dear Abby” and “Miss Manners” and who couldn’t care less what you, I, or the “fellow over there” think of their actions.

What a complete bastard. I hope they found the S.o.B. and threw the book at him. Personally I’m more a fan of dogs than of cats but one shouldn’t have to be a cat lover to agree that that is simply revolting. I went to look at that article, and so help me, I looked at the lone comment too: “What the hell is wrong with people?”

It’s not often the entire comments section on an article is perfect.

This has reminded me of one of the more disgraceful things I’ve witnessed. A stray golden retriever puppy was crossing a multilane boulevard (45 mph speed limit) and had almost made it all the way to safety when some evildoer in a gold-colored Trans Am _changed lanes and sped up_ to run him over.

unfortunately, I did not get a good look at the driver’s face as he zoomed past me – I was scrabbling in the median strip for a stone large enough to heave through his windshield.

Didn’t find one in time. ☹

Yeah, I don’t get the “putting the dog in the trunk” thing, either. I’ve seen photos of dogs that apparently were dragged behind cars. To me, absolutely sickening. But reading responses from people who are of the belief that putting dogs in trunks is perfectly okay, I wonder if the dog being dragged behind a car situation could have been from a dog being in a trunk and then _somehow_ (gee, I CAN’T imagine how :smack:) escaping the trunk while the car is in motion. I mean, nobody would deLIBerately tie a dog (or any other kind of creature, for that matter) up to the back of a car and then drive off leaving the poor thing at the end of rope to be dragged along the hard ground for however many yards, blocks, miles, would they? I mean, that would _never_ happen in real life, would it?

I feel for people who try to analyze “people” (and I use the term lightly) like that. Words cannot do justice to how I feel about that person right now.

Most people let there dogs in before that (our dog has extremely thick fur and seems to handle the cold better than most), but most of the people I know also leave there dogs out for most of the day below -20C. I’m thinking your definition of cold does not match those of a majority of human beings… nor that of most state legislatures.

[Overview of State Cruelty Laws](http://www.animallaw.info/articles/ovusstatecrueltylaws.htm)

> Depending on the state law, neglecting to provide shelter to an animal in a cold climate may be considered neglect (for example, Minnesota has a specific provision in its cruelty laws for dog houses when dogs are kept outdoors; violation is a petty misdemeanor). While neglect may be broadly defined by state law, the factual circumstances will always determine criminal culpability.

Now outdoor dogs who have a reasonable shelter that they can get into when excessively cold… that I have no issue with.
