Welcome to the Board, **mahatmacoat**! (Say, are you named after a now-closed Indian restaurant in London?)

I confess, I screw up my apostrophe placement all the time. I am scum.

As I mentioned the last time this came up, the one that really gets me is “lead” for the past tense of “to lead”. Our local newspaper does this all the time. I think it’s a spell-check error.

_See “what annoys you” thread._
Exce\*\*‘ **s** ’ **sive u** ’ **se of apo** ’ **strophe** ’\*\*s.
WR for just R – using an older word incorrectly.
Your \ you’re
Athiest.

Worst of all: LAY.

_It’s the truth: you’re lying on the couch!_

‘Whose’ and ‘who’s’. You have to look no further than the SDMB this morning for that.

OTH, I’m one who can’t keep effect/affect straight and I spent 2 years on a copy desk.

Isn’t it “notching,” as in putting the string into the notch of the arrow?

My personal pet peeves are their/there/they’re and your/you’re confusion. It’s really not all that difficult, people!

Loose vs. lose is a relatively new offense in my experience.

There vs. their or even they’re is stunning but the all time irrational cork popper is **WIERD**. Bugs me.

your/you’re. I read a lot of fanfiction, where ocasionally the spelling/grammar is so bad it’s painful. The your/you’re mixup is one of the most common errors, and I will always, always start my review with ‘you’re = you are. Your is a possesive pronoun. Arg.’

alot. I haven’t got this wrong since 4th form, when my latin teacher wrote ‘a’ on one side of the board and ‘lot’ on the other. He then assigned extra translations to anyone that got it wrong after that.

Textspeak anywhere other than text messaging annoys me no end. cu l8r is the worst way to end any text conversation.
