> **My Neighbor Totoro**. It has such a low level of conflict that I’ve heard people argue that there’s no plot. Can’t agree, but there are no villians and it’s just full of wonders.

Good pick and probably what I would go with. There is no sweeter movie in the world, though I would not have wanted to see it as a double-bill with Graveyard of the Fireflies.

Ebert got it right by saying:

> [@](#):
>
> Here is a children’s film made for the world we should live in, rather than the one we occupy. A film with no villains. No fight scenes. No evil adults. No fighting between the two kids. No scary monsters. No darkness before the dawn. A world that is benign. A world where if you meet a strange towering creature in the forest, you curl up on its tummy and have a nap.

Yes.

Julie and Julia. A woman’s movie about women in which their husbands are actually good guys.

Hey, any movie where enlightenment is achieved through sex and art can’t be _too_ hokey.

**Amelie** was the one I thought of after reading the OP.

_Waking Ned Devine_ is a sweet film makes me feel good all over, even if it is about cheating.

Though, come to think of it, why should I feel good at the sight of

a naked old skinny guy riding a motorbike through the Irish countryside, hellbent-for-leather?

Because it is the funniest thing ever? Seriously, when I saw that in the theater my roommate laughed so hard the whole row of seats shook.

Hard to say. Probably _Blue Velvet_.

> My all-time favorite movie is **Harvey** , with Jimmy Stewart, and it is very much about kindness.

Absolutely agree:

**[Elwood P. Dowd](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000071/)**: Years ago my mother used to say to me, she’d say, “In this world, Elwood, you must be” - she always called me Elwood - “In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.” Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.
And now, for my own submission.

I know I will get a lot of crap about this, but I suggest _Touched by an Angel_. Sweet and kind-hearted, not preachy, Della Reese was great, and Roma Downy more than kinda hot. Plus, how can you hate on any show where the angel of death is played by a guy named Dye?

A few years ago a little independent movie called _The Visitor_ came out that I think is one of the best movies of the past decade, and it really hits all the right notes for this thread.

Well worth checking out…

Psst. See the OP.

But, fwiw, I concur heartily.

:smack:

I actually bought a copy (a used DVD for 99 cents) without knowing anything about the movie whatsoever, and it’s one of the happiest accidents of my entire entertainment-related life…

Holy moly, it _was_ released as a double-bill with Grave of the Fireflies!

> [@](#):

> After writing and filming Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and Castle in the Sky (1986), Hayao Miyazaki began directing My Neighbor Totoro for Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki’s production paralleled his colleague Isao Takahata’s production of Grave of the Fireflies. Miyazaki’s film was financed by executive producer Yasuyoshi Tokuma, and **both My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies were released on the same bill in 1988**. The dual billing was considered “one of the most moving and remarkable double bills ever offered to a cinema audience”

Sounds like an absolutely insane double-bill to me.

What’s next, a double-feature of _Bambi_ with _Come and See_?
