That could be why they’re broken - you record the value of the transaction on both ends of a longer piece, fire the clay, break it in half and each party keeps one piece.

One video I watched suggested this saying they find a lot of broken ones, but never (maybe once?) find both halves together suggesting that they were meant to be ‘redeemed’ sort of like a ticket or used as a ‘receipt’.
