Whoa, funniest ingrown groinal area I’ve ever seen.
Anyway that white officer with the cap was a little overzealous with the restraint (arm holds behind the back, pulling on his hair, getting his hand all up in his neck) and I called that he’d be the guy to whip out the taser. He doesn’t just stop when the idiot is on the ground either–he keeps tasering to the detriment of getting him under control. Sadistic prick .
Not the say the idiot didn’t have it coming, I just hate seeing a bumbling police officer defaulting to use of force when things get even slightly frustrating. It’s the only profession where you can let your occupational frustrations out in a physically violent way and be protected.

Is it just me, or is there an epidemic of obesity in American police departments? Three cops in good physical condition should be able to take a man to the ground, cuff him and have him back on his feet, untazered, in somewhere between eight and fifteen seconds. I mean, I hate doughnut jokes about cops as much as anybody, but these boys have been hittin’ the spuds and gravy a little hard. When did good physical conditioning stop being part of every police department’s requirement?

When you perform your job in public, you get a lot more respect when you do it efficiently and effectively. The spectacle of three fat cops rolling around on the grass with a naked guy just invites public disdain. Imagine the same scene with three highly-trained, fit officers taking the robeless goof down, cuffing him and hustling him out of there before Miss Handshake gets close.

What I want to know is why are the tasers so ineffective? Every tasering video I’ve seen, the tasee keeps moving and kicking and talking and resisting. But in the videos of cops getting tased during training, they drop like rocks and don’t get up. So why don’t they work like that in the field?

IANA cop, but I do work in more proximity to LE than most folks. And I did not look at the video in the OP, so I’m going to be speaking here in generalities, not to the case at hand.
Ordinary citizens tend to think of naked people in public as funny or harmless. They certainly can’t be hiding a weapon, right? Nudge, wink, grin. Certainly all the upthread commentary on the guy’s penis shows this attitude.

In reality, a naked person in a public setting is considered by the cops to be pretty dangerous. The taboo against public nudity is strong enough (at least in the US) that almost anyone found naked in public is not even close to rational.

Sure there are exceptions where sorta-public nudity is something rational people do too, like in a locker room, at a swimmin’ hole, or even a protest march about censorship or clothing optional beaches.

But when you see a naked guy/gal on an ordinary street corner, no matter what else they may be doing or saying, you can be pretty sure you’re dealing with a real nutter on a bender.

Maybe it’s the drugs, maybe it’s the voices, but whatever it is, you’re not going to be dealing with a rational citizen who’s likely to respond to reason. Whether that “reason” is a polite request to surrender or a clear threat to have all 8 cops beat you unconscious with their sticks, followed by a good tazering for the hell of it.

The cops are stuck with the problem of getting the situation under control in a reasonable amount of time with a limited risk to themsleves, bystanders, or property. None of that is easy with a non-rational opponent.

You should watch the video. You’ll probably laugh at how many of your generalizations don’t apply to this specific situation.

Huh, I read the first sentence as “I really hate taters” and I thought, “What did I ever do to **CutterJohn**?” I really need to ingest more caffiene and put my glasses on.

On to the little subject at hand…The guy should have complied, but it did seem to be a bit of overkill.

Don’t bet on it.

I teach defensive tactics for law enforcement. I start every class by taking the smallest guy over to the side and telling him that he’s gonna be the bad guy. He can’t fight the officers, he just has to resist being handcuffed. I then take the three biggest guys and have them put cuffs on him. They can’t hit him (it is a training class, after all), they simply have to restrain him.

The fastest I’ve seen so far is about three minutes. It’s amazing how hard it is to restrain someone who doesn’t want to be. That is why we teach PPCT and tasering; it imposes order very quickly and reduces the chances for all parties involved to be injured.

Agreed. In fact, forget handcuffing someone, just try getting them on an ambulance stretcher when they don’t want to go. It’s damn hard and it’s not quick.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I saw protesters passively resisting arrest several times. Even if the protester was perfectly passive, it was hard for cops to really move him anywhere quickly, or handcuff him, or do anything but let him lie there. That’s part of the reason that passive resistance was promoted.

It’s very hard to control someone who’s out of his gourd, and by out of his gourd I do include drunkenness. He’s not going to be cautious of getting hurt, as he’s just not thinking clearly. He’ll think that he’s invulnerable, and he’s not going to worry about hurting other people, either.

I still can’t open that video, but I tend to think that MOST cops make the right call MOST of the time. Sure, there are some of them who are on a power trip, and some of them make incredibly stupid mistakes, but I think that for the most part, they do their jobs to the best of their ability, and it’s very easy to sit back after the fact and point out how YOU would have handled things.

That dude in the video was more than drunk.

Also, I think I am going to start a rock band called More Than Drunk.
