The Netherlands/Canadian War Heroes

Matthew Halton was one of the CBC’s war correspondents during World War II. Many of his radio dispatches from Europe are available on the CBC 's digital archives.

Here’s his report on May 5, 1945 - VE Day: “Is It True?”. At about 6 minutes in, he recounts witnessing the surrender of German troops in the Netherlands, by General Blaskowitz to a Canadian, General Foulkes.

Well, heavenly days, I didn’t know that, and I live here.

I love that video. The boy is so serious (and has the arm-snapping salute and foot stamp just right) and the passing contingent treats him equally seriously.

There is also a Netherlands Carillon in London, Ontario,http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=18968

It’s a few short blocks from my house, I walk my dog past it most days. This park is littered with war memorials actually, because this was a founding city for this country. Though it’s now a lovely park in the middle of the city, it was once the actual army base/British garrison, back in the day.
