The new Dollar Coin... yea or nay

They’re not.

The Sacajewia “golden” dollar coins only came out this year, and they’re still pretty hard to find. Most people who do manage to get one (as far as I know) stash it away in their collections without spending it.

And don’t get me started on that abyssmal failure from 1979-1981 called the Susan B. Anthony dollar…

Oddly enough, they’re fairly common in my (rural Louisiana) hometown. This is in part due to my father and brother (who share many of my eccentricities) making a point of withdrawing rolls of them from the local bank and spending them wherever they would normally spend a dollar bill. In a town of 2800, two eccentrics can make a difference. If enough sackies get into circulation, people will stop seeing them as rarities and quit collecting them.

Really though, if you can get rolls of them in a bank in a town that’s just 3 miles east of the Middle of Nowhere, surely you can get them at your bank!

I like coins, but I fully agree that the penny needs to go. If nothing else, it’ll make more room for sackies in the change jars of those who don’t like them.

I like em. When I go to get cash at the bank (when depositing a check or the like), I usually get a $10 bill, and 10 golden dollars. I use the coins in the vending machine outside my office…and I think it’s really nice to have 5 bucks in coins, that DOESN’T weight that much…considerably better than 20 quarters.

You gotta feel sorry for waiter/waitresses then, cuz usually people leave a dollar or 2 tip, if they were all coins, ouch. Imagine comming back with 100 dollars, in coins.

But maybe people will start giving 5’s for tips, my mother would sure like that,

So you don’t like your wallet superthick, eh? How about
that wad of old singles you get at the parking pay booth
when all you had was a twenty, and the clerk just happened to be out of fives and tens?

big frigging deal…100 Sackies can hardly weigh more than 2 pounds. I read somewhere that in the old days a hundred real silver dollars weighed about 6 pounds, so a hundred Sackies have to be waaayyyyy less.

In that scenerio, if we had no dollar bills, I’d get 20 coins instead. 20 singles beats 20 coins any day, in my (pocket)book.
