I think “Sing Me Spanish Techno” is a barn burner. It just doesn’t feature Neko.
I thought it was good at first, and it’s getting better with every listen.
Personally, I liked Electric Version way more than Mass Romantic.
You know, that’s a really good point. As much as I like Neko’s solo stuff, I can only listen to a little bit of it before I’m just exhausted. She can wail like nobody’s business, but after a while you just want her to cheer up or something. That’s part of why I like “All for Swinging You Around” and “The Laws Have Changed” so much – she’s still knocking it out of the park, but it’s a different sound. Her lead songs on Twin Cinema sound like a hybrid of her solo stuff and Electric Version, and they end up not being as impressive as either, IMO.
(But sorry to keep hijacking your thread talking about Neko Case, Interrobang.)
Wow! Am really loving the music from the site. Are all of their other albums just as good?
Haven’t heard the new one yet, but I can guarantee the first two are spectacular.
Good, becuase I just sampled a few other trakcs and bought the new one and Mass Romantic online. Yay for me!
Mass Romantic is generally viewed as their best.
Electric Version is less tight than MR, but still good.
Twin Cinema has the most Neko of any of them, but in general has a new sound relative to MR or EV.
I like it. As usual I wasn’t impressed on first listen (rare that I am with any album TBH–I usually compare it negatively with the previous stuff I’ve heard by the band or the single). Now I’d say I like it about the same as Electric Version (a very patchy, up-and-down album, I felt) and just a little bit less than Mass Romantic.
It doesn’t have the Neko-led monster that was All For Swinging You Around, or the púre pop super-goodness that is Miss Teen Wordpower–the two highlights of Electric Version. But, track 3 (‘Use It’) and tracks 8 through 11 are all very listenable IMO.
My “barn-burner”–assuming that means scrumptious poppy album-highlight–is one that I haven’t seen mentioned yet (what a surprise). That’s track 10, ‘Broken Breads’. Never let me say I don’t like one word choruses again! This is wonderous!
