The new Star Trek Series should have a Muslim character

They could cast a mostly / all Muslim cast featuring Muslims of varying races and backgrounds.

They could also write the show with the Trek crew coming to terms with the policies of Starfleet causing the culture of another planet to devolve into chaos.

[A metaphor to explore the foreign policy of the US as it related to the Middle East and how America’s support for Osama over years inadvertently set the conditions which allowed for his organization to grow in reach and scope.]

There are several comic books featuring Muslim characters and supernatural powers.

In any case, I quite like the premise that humans on Earth have gotten beyond religion.

I think there were a few moments where Picard made vague references to an afterlife that sounded blandly Judaeo-Christian - IIRC an episode where the entire crew was going to die and some worried redshirt came to ask for solace. The scene was a bit like a ST version of Gandalf’s ‘The journey does not end here’ bit.

I remember a scene in which Picard yells, “You are not God!” at Q.

That it’s time to retire the Star Trek franchise.

Considering I just spent the last 72 hours celebrating 50 years of Trek, I respectfully disagree.

On the contrary, just as in the turbulent 60s, I think now more than ever we need a show like Trek on the air.

OK, I’m persuaded. A low-key Muslim, happens to be Muslim but not Salafi. A sort of counter to the identity politics of Arab nationalists, hardline Salafists, and anti-Muslim types. It could work.
