The new Tool song, "Vicarious," or: Is more of the same good or bad?

Sorry to keep posting on this, but thought you all might be interested. You can listen to song #5 The Pot (in addition to Vicarious) on Myspace

Thanks for the replies, millions!

I’ve been listening to the album in its entirety for about a week and it is very, very good. I had a little trouble getting my head around it until I researched the lyrics and read a few of the spoiler-ish reviews. Lyrically, the album is very strong - insightful yet caustic and satirical as we’ve come to expect from Maynard.

The two tracks I’ve been playing the most are “The Pot” and “Rosetta Stoned”. The not so subtle subtext (once you have the lyrics in front of you) of “The Pot” is it’s about the Pot calling the Kettle black. One could probably infer that it might be about the marijuana subculture, but that’s really less interesting to me. What’s great, though, is Maynard’s ssassy, soulful singing on the track, complemented by the really great, punchy riff and rhythm combo. “Lost Keys” rather perfectly sets up the “Rosetta Stoned” which is either about a guy recounting what happened during an alien abduction or during a really crazy acid trip.

The big spoiler I found concerns the album’s title, which gives tremendous weight to the title track:

Maynard’s mother, Judith Marie, was paralyzed at the age of 32 and spent the rest of her life in a wheelchair. She died at the age of 59. 27 years is approximately 10,000 days. The title track is a loving tribute to his mother’s unwavering faith in religion, a sharp contrast to his lyrics in the APC song named after her. Get the lyrics and listen to the song again. “Wings for Marie” may go down as THE epic Tool song.
