# The Next President of the United States, Deez Nuts

What would happen if [Deez Nuts](https://www.google.com/search?q=%22deez+nuts%22+presidential+poll&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8) won the majority of the popular vote in the upcoming election?
It seems a brilliant protest that would give hope to all of humanity.
I don’t expect it to happen, but if it did?
Theoretically, the Electoral College could still vote for whoever they wished, yes?

How would the Electoral College be chosen if the majority of votes were cast for an imaginary joke candidate? Since Deez Nuts presumably won’t have submitted a slate of Electors, I’d guess his votes would be declared invalid and the second place candidate would get to send their Electors to the college, and thus would presumably win the election, albeit under rather embarassing circumstances.

I suspect in a lot of states election laws those votes simply wouldn’t be counted. Ohio, for example, you actually have to register as a write in candidate to have the votes count. There is a real person behind the campaign. He’s 15. Being almost three decades shy of being eligible for the office I’d bet he actually doesn’t win many if any states when the official counts are released.

And at least in Ohio, you can’t just register yourself. You have to register the whole 22-person ticket, 20\* of whom must be residents of the state.
\*Either the form hasn’t been updated since Ohio had 20 electors or two of them are alternates.

Just two decades short. 35 - 15 = 20. On the other hand, maybe that sentence didn’t have a misplaced modifier, and you actually did mean that _you_ were three decades shy of eligibility. 🙂

Generally, electors are pledged to vote for the name on the ticket. Occasionally, one violates the pledge and I don’t think they have been prosecuted. The last time I am aware of this happening was in 1948 when the Dixiecrats won states worth 38 electoral votes but got 39 in the electoral college, so one elector chosen as a Democrat voted for the Dixiecrats anyway.

They’re pledged to vote for the ticket that submitted them as part of their slate of Electors. But candidate Nutz doesn’t exist, and so presumably there will be zero electors pledged to him even if he wins the majority of the vote in a given state.
I think **DinoR** is correct on what would happen in most states. Write in votes are only legit if they’re for a candidate who has submitted a list of electors. Votes for Nutz would be invalid, and so the electors pledged to the (hopefully real) candidate who got the second most votes would go to the College.

So the thing to do then is to register the electors as well.
Just have them sworn to refuse to vote.
No candidate receives the majority of electoral college votes.
No president.

No.
If no one gets a majority of the Electoral College vote, the House of Representatives decides among the top-three vote getters.
Although if 100% of the Electors refused to vote, thereby leaving no one theoretically eligible for election by the House…
