Agree about the scenery, having been to both Cairo and Zermatt, although the location scenes for Egypt were done in Morocco. They probably used stock footage to set the stage. Somewhat implausible (Jonathan falling in love with Sophie ten minutes after meeting her), but the plot must move forward. All in all, not bad and we’ll likely watch the remaining five episodes.
Since I ditched SlingTV I’ll have to wait until this comes on amazon or elsewhere. <sigh> It cost too much just to watch one show. And all the movies cost extra.
Now available on Amazon Prime–first episode is up.
Watching the second episode. Engaging.
Just wanted to say that the Jonathan Pine role was made for Ralph Fiennes.
Anyone else still watching this? I’m LOVING it. The filming/locations are incredible. What I REALLY like is that it involves a limited “transaction.” The main plot point is this single sale of weapons. Much easier to get my head around and keep my interest than something vastly broader in scope and time.
Was astounded when the bearded guy showed the docs to his boss. Loved it when he showed his stones after being intimidated on his bike.
Really a wonderful miniseries! (Almost as good as Wayward Pines! ;))
I plan on coming back to it when I can binge watch it instead of waiting
Unfortunately, what I did see of the first episode made me say to my wife “Look, they found a way to make a riot boring!” I didn’t have time then to focus on it, and there’s enough talent there to give it another shot when I’m in the right frame of mind.
Oddly enough I thought exactly the opposite. Really not a role for Coleman.
For some reason the series annoyed me a little; probably my class prejudice at seeing all those cosseted posh boys living very easy lives - Hiddlestone, Hollander, Lawrie.
Piss, went for the episode the other night and no luck. We just cancel cable due to vacation coming up and going to OTA and streaming. Guess I’ll have t pony up to whatever service carries AMC?
Still watching. I record the episodes and watch after I’ve read recaps/forums at previously.tv. I would not be able to follow the story if I didn’t read in advance. Loving Hiddelston, but Laurie does not have the inward evil. I want Hollander to be killed.
Hugh Laurie also did a long stint on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” before House and other projects.
$1.99/ episode on Amazon.
What’s the point of making Olivia’s character pregnant?
Is Jonathan/Thomas/Andrew’s libido really THAT uncontrollable?? Geez.
Agreed. That’s the one thing about a mostly excellent production that rubs me completely the wrong way. He’s in this incredibly stressful situation where he has to keep layers and layers of lies straight… and he can’t resist having an affair with the girlfriend of the most dangerous man in the world? Come ON.
One random comment: I think the show’s opening titles are stunning.
I haven’t read the book but presumably because it takes attention away from her face, so they’re less likely to identify her, should it ever comes to it, and it makes them ignore her when she’s getting all close to Pine.
She actually was pregnant during filming.
I think I’m three episodes in. So far pretty good. Much easier to follow than Tinker Tailor and Smiley’s People (for better or worse). I’m glad they’re making it. I tried watching The Game, which seemed like an attempt to do a Carre-esque show, and had to quit a few episodes in due to the stupid. So it’s nice to have the real thing this time.
To be fair, she’s really hot. And he seems to be a bit nympho.
I was going to say it if someone else didn’t.
The book is a fair bit different, Olivia Colman’s character is a man, the baddies are a Columbian drug cartel etc. The general thrust of the story is the same though.
I assume you mean the recent movie? The miniseries is amazing.
Well I’d be distracted by a pregnant man, for sure!
An old GRU tactic, I believe.
I binge watched the first four epis yesterday after being prodded into doing so by a friend. I owe him a nice dinner, this is the best tv I’ve seen in a long time. So beautifully shot, well-acted, and changed enough from the book to make it right for tv, but not enough to make it unwatchable for fans of the original text.
So agree with Thelma Lou. My first thought was that the Pine role screamed for Ralph Fiennes, but after 4 epis, I’m quite taken with Mr. Hiddleston. He is quite quite good at the art of displaying enigmatic, yet telling, facial expressions, all the while maintaining that suave upper-class Brit thing. It is believable that women are drawn to that. And it’s in the tradition of the spy genre that the agent boff everything in a skirt that crosses his path.
Definitely anticipating the final two epis and hoping the group that made this one will make more.
