Of course! He’ll need someone to blame. Somehow failure to raise taxes and improve social services will lead to an increase in crime.

I think I’ve already pointed out enough times that crime was way, way down long before Stop and Frisk came along.

Is it possible he’s confused Stop and Frisk with Broken Windows?

On that score _anything_ is possible.

> First, Democrats do _not_ want to roll back aggressive NYPD policing. That’s part of the problem. Most of them want to keep Ray Kelly as commissioner. De Blasio, progressive hero that he is, would consider firing Kelly so he can rehire Bill Bratton, the man who brought us the broken window theory. Law & order issues do not neatly break down on party lines here.
>
> Rent _control_ has not exerted much influence on the real estate market in NYC for a long, long time. Rent _stabilization_ is a different matter altogether. This issue is much more complicated but I feel like I would be wasting my breath.

In a move that surprises no New Yorker who isn’t 18-25 and lives in Brookyln, Bill De Blasio has chosen Bill Bratton of Giuliani administration fame to be his next police commisisoner. Yes, that Bill Bratton who [would have crushed OWS like a cockroach.](http://gothamist.com/2013/12/06/de_blasios_new_nypd_commissioner_wo.php)

And his promise for transparent public debate over his education commissioner? Silently withdrawn. I can’t wait to see what happens when he actually takes office.

I’m not surprised since the idea was floated before the election, but it’s a very bad sign. We’ll see how things are supposed to be different this time.

Of course; I posted about it this back in August. De Blasio’s been talking up Bratton for years. This is why I could never believe that he is some kind of progressive hero or even vaguely sympathetic to the concerns of poor minorities in this city. I am still hoping that I have misjudged de Blasio completely and that my skepticism will turn out to be unwarranted, but I won’t hold my breath.

On the plus side, now **adaher** should feel safe enough to come pay us a visit.

[This](http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2013/12/brattons-endorsement-of-stop-and-frisk.html) piece is more substantive.

> [@](#):
>
> Bratton emphatically endorsed stop-and-frisk as a police tactic. “First off, stop-question-and-frisk has been around forever,” he told me. “It is known by stop-and-frisk in New York, but other cities describe it other ways, like stop-question-and-frisk or Terry stops. It’s based on a Supreme Court case from 1968, Terry v. Ohio, which focused very significantly on it. Stop-and-frisk is such a basic tool of policing. It’s one of the most fundamental practices in American policing. If cops are not doing stop-and-frisk, they are not doing their jobs. It is a basic, fundamental tool of police work in the whole country. If you do away with stop-and-frisk, this city will go down the chute as fast as anything you can imagine.”
>
> We also discussed the current controversy over stop-and-frisk under Raymond Kelly, Bloomberg’s Police Commissioner. “What you have right now is a controversy in which nobody really understands what they are fighting about,” Bratton said. “Stop-and-frisk is not a tool solely to look for guns. Unfortunately, both the Mayor and the Police Commissioner refer to it that way, and that’s a problem because so few guns are recovered. But so what? The vast majority of stops are for a wide variety of things. Is someone drinking a can of beer on the corner? You want to stop that behavior. If somebody is aggressively panhandling on the street, urinating against a building. Is there somebody that you suspect is casing a building? Or is that two guys just locked out of their apartment? Police officers notice what may be a burglary. Of course they should be noticing and investigating. There are countless examples of what you want police to do.”

He’s getting scolded so much by people who should be his allies that he’s got to start learning eventually. I mean, who wouldn’t listen to their political allies? I’m sure that thanks to Andrew Cuomo’s support for charter schools, De Blasio will start supporting them too.

There haven’t been any huge successes or major scandals. It’s been so slow that the Post, which [informed in December de Blasio’s spokeswoman was scandalously dating Eliot Spitzer](http://nypost.com/2013/12/25/spitzer-spends-christmas-at-gal-pals-family-home/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=NYPTwitter&utm_medium=SocialFlow), which led to her being hounded out of a job, [is now saying de Blasio shouldn’t have fired her](http://nypost.com/2014/03/10/letting-lis-smith-go-was-de-blasios-biggest-mistake/). 😛 I know you’re informing us of these poll numbers with the best of intentions because you just want the best for New York, but it’s a long term.

More goes on in an administration besides scandals. He’s done things people don’t like. He didn’t go from winning over 60% of the vote to 39% approval because people got bored.

I’m not trying to declare him a failure when he’s just begun, just pointing out that he’s off to a pretty bad start. And most of the fire at him is coming from Democrats.

Well, he hasn’t made a lot of friends in Albany yet, but it was probably inevitable he’d clash with Cuomo and the legislature.

I think he’d be smart to find a few smaller issues to focus on and rack up some easy wins. That would let him get some victories on his belt, get him some good press, and get his staff into the swing of things, which will help him when he turns to bigger stuff, like pre-k and affordable housing.
