I’m sure Michael still helps get, (and keep) a fair number of clients. If David demotes Michael back to salesperson, he risks losing him. Filling the (Jan and Ryan’s old) position with a no-nonsense guy who helps David relax a little would SEEM like the perfect solution. ---

I find it a little amusing. I recall in an early scene in the wire where we see him in a business class, with his glasses and his notebook. And I’m thinking he is an oaf gangster, and quite out of place, even though it’s a smart move for his business. And now he is here, doing pretty much the same thing, just played straight. ---
