Left work early and voted in the basement of the UCC church across the street from us. Not too crowded. Our only wait was for the Board of Elections drone to find us in the big book. My wife and I got our ballots (optical scan), voted, and were out the door within ten minutes. Then my son, 16, and I did canvassing for Obama with another volunteer in a not-so-pleasant neighborhood of Cleveland for two hours until nightfall. It says something about how organized this campaign is, and how many volunteers it has, that we were going to houses that have already been visited _twice_ today (but the residents therein had not confirmed that they’ve voted). It used to be that home-state advantage was a thing, but I doubt it matters more than a percentage point or two now. it is a bit more difficult to win without bringing your state with you. gore did not bring his home state with him in 2000, he would have won the election if he brought it. romney and obama have 2 states each that they call home. mich and mass, il and hi. obama winning his home states give him 24 elec. votes. romney winning his give him 27. romney just gave obama 11 votes by not carrying the state in which he votes and was gov. ---

BBC says voting hours are being extended in Virginia. Everyone who was in line as of 7pm will be allowed to vote, no matter how long it takes. (Isn’t that standard anyway?) They also read a message from the mayor of Miami saying the vote for Obama exceeded what it did in 2008, very much surpassing this year’s expectations. Maybe a good omen for all of Florida? ---
