I think he said it’s the fault of the people who put women in with the men, knowing that men just can’t control themselves. He may have been sincere, too - he can’t trust \*himself \*in a room alone with a woman other than his wife. He did say women can’t be effective in military roles, so he also would be surprised to learn about Joan of Arc. Maybe Tammy Duckworth can tell him about her. But he’d still be a better President than Trump, huh? ---

I like how he calls Mulan “delicate” more than once. I haven’t seen the movie, and I know little of chinese history, but I was aware that the character was based on a real life person. How closely disney follows the real life of that person is up in the air, of course. The fact that Mike Pence can be bothered to write a diatribe on a movie, blaming it for any future issues with women in the military, while he can’t even be assed to google the name to see if any of the parts that “disney decided” were actually factual history… well, I would say that it’d lower my opinion of him, but that doesn’t seem very possible. I suppose really, it just makes me think that that is about par for the course for republicans in general these days. ---

I wouldn’t expect the governor of Indiana to have automatically known about the Chinese legend, but then I wouldn’t have expected the governor of Indiana to go off on an ignorance-laden misogynist rant about a children’s cartoon either. ---

The earliest reference to her is a short poem from the 6th century, and it’s most likely that it wasn’t based on a real person, since that’s the _only_ reference, until it’s used as the basis for a play a couple centuries later. But that doesn’t change that Disney’s Mulan is actually a lot _less_ of a badass than her inspiration (real or legendary), who lived as a (highly respected!) soldier for over a decade (before returning home and marrying a local man, not her commanding officer). ---

Women who dress up as men and go into battle is part of _Spiritus Mundi_. The folklore and songs of nearly every nation have their own version of the story. Some of them – like Mulan – are taking the place of an ill father or nonexistent brother; some are seeking to rescue a wounded lover; some are just major Badass. Also, Pence is a dipshit. ---

The same basic plot happens in both; the Emperor calls from one man from every family to repel an invading army, and Mulan surreptitiously replaces her father in part because he is old and weak. But in the movie, she has no fighting skills at first, and has to learn them in the film’s boot camp sequence while, in comical fashion, hiding the fact she’s a woman. ---

It’s worth noting that in the same sequence most of the men are similarly incompetent and gain their fighting skills as it progresses. That said, her main advantage in the film is her ability to think creatively, particularly when explosives are involved. Anyway - how about them Republicans? ---

The latest in Republican/conservative pearl-clutching is that they’ve [all got the vapors](https://www.balloon-juice.com/2017/06/25/open-thread-vulgar-as-in-of-the-common-people/) over being called the ‘death party’ because the GOP [del]health care bill[/del] tax cut for the rich is going to cause tens of thousands of additional deaths each year. Apparently killing people is A-OK, but if you make people feel bad about it, that’s _uncivil_. And of course: Ramesh Ponnoru, _The Party of Death_, Regnery, 2006. ---
